Gov. Established an Emancipation Commission

Governor Schneider is forming a commission to plan the 150th anniversary of the Danish Governor’s Emancipation Proclamation of July 3rd 1848. The emancipation could attract attention all over America since it predates Abraham Lincoln’s Proclamation by 20 years. The Gov. is talking about creating an African Diaspora museum. 05/05/97 4:17 PM

Does American Eagle have a monopoly?

At the Tourism Conference, the airlines were one topic of discussion according to the Daily News. At one panel the topic was the airfares American Eagle charges from St. Thomas to San Juan. Why does it cost $187? The airline says they are interested competition.

Carambola May Sell to Carnival

Carnival Cruise Lines is reported to be interested in buying the Carambola Beach resort on St. Croix. Governor Schneider said a deal may be in the works to retro fit the hotel for use as a home port base for Carnival Cruise Line.

Sex Offenders Bill Held in Committee

The Committee on Government Operations considered a bill to register sex offenders. The idea is keep the public aware of who they are and where they live. We stand to lose federal funds if we don’t have a law like this. Moreover, the people who testified about the bill said we needs this kind of legislation to protect children from sex offenders. 05/06/97 9:12 AM

Enighed Pond Meeting on St. John

Last evening residents of St. John heard that if they want a pier they are going to have to demand that the Army Corp. of Engineers issue a permit to let it move forward. A scaled down version of the Enighed pond pier could be developed to relieve the congestion at the Cruz Bay bulkhead.

National Tourism Week

This is National Tourism Week in the Virgin Islands. Today is tourist for a day for 75 elementary school students. It is also Hospitality Employee Day when we honor the people in the hospitality business here. Take a moment to thank the people on the front lines of the tourism and hospitality business.

We are monitoring for a disease

The health department wants you to know that cases of Meningococcemia have been reported in the Dominican Republic. It has not been reported here but we are on the alert for this disease. It is characterized by sneezing and coughing and it is contagous. You don’t need to worry, but we need to be alert.

Vitema Is Holding A Workshop On The New Preparedness Plans

Dog Story

I’m going to start calling this the Good Dog News. Audrey Callwood called back in March. Her little brown Chihuahua wandered away from home. Today Jackie calls, a Chihuahua wandered into a home on Crown Mountain. Lost Dog, Found Dog. Turns out it’s not the same dog, but Audrey wants it anyway – right after she finishes taking the 75 elementary school students on the tourism of the day tour.

New Welfare Workers Tax Break

Attention employers – there is a new tax break for your business. If you hire people who were receiving welfare benefits, you get a 35% reduction in your tax obligation. There are rules and the program will be administered by the Dept. of Labor.

Water Island Report
