Sad News from Miami Vania wasn’t number one

The Miss Universe Contest is over and Vania Thomas was not the winner. She gave it her best, she scored well but alas there were other contestants who charmed the judges and Vania did not make get to the finals. She’ll always be our Miss Universe and we congratulate her for giving it her best. 05/17/97 7:42 AM

Industrial Development Commission Gets new Director.

Louis Paiewonsky 3rd has been appointed to be the new Executive Director of the Industrial Development Commission. His new job is to encourage new business development, new trade and commerce. Paiewonsky has been the new business development manager at the West Index Corporation for the last 14 years. He took the Pepsi account from 35,000 cases a year to 800,000 cases a year. On top of that his marketing campaigns have been award winning performances. This man know how to do business. 05/17/97 8:43 AM

National Park has Youth Conservation Corp.

There are some job openings for youth at the National Park this summer. The jobs begin June 23 and run the Aug 15th paying $4.75 per hour. These jobs involve hard work and an appreciation of the environment. Call Ina Daniel at 693-8989

Safe Boating Week

Too many boating accidents are the result of fatigue, recklessness or drunkenness. The Governor has designated the week of May 17 to 24 as Safe Boating Week in the Virgin Islands. It is time to check your boat for safety supplies. Do you have enough floatation devices for everyone? Fire extinguisher? How about a whistle and a flare? And remember Don’t drink and Drive, Don’t drink and drive the boat either.

St. John Nude Bathing Ruling Isn’t Finished

The man who was found guilty of bathing nude on Solomon Beach says it’s not over til the fat lady sings. He has gone back in the law books to find the original law from 1921 which the Virgin Islands borrowed from Alaska. To be guilty of nude bathing it has to be willful and lewd. He says he is appealing because the beach is openly a nude beach and no one is bothered by it. Moreover, he says he wasn’t lewd to anyone. We’ll keep you posted.

On the Calendar

At 10:00 AM – Lieutenant Governor Mapp is conducting a homeowners insurance seminar today at 10:00 AM – at CAHS. It is free, refreshments will be served. For the 100th anniversary of Albert Daniel’s birth there is a celebration of his life and art at the Virgin Islands Cultural Heritage Institute at 5:30 PM – and at 7:30 PM there’s an opening of the exhibit and a reception. The Police Ball originally scheduled for Say Mat 17th has been rescheduled for May 31st. Coming Up tomorrow Senator Judy Gomez hosts the Honor of Honors Parade at 3:00 PM from Emile Griffin Ballpark to Emancipation Garden. Come honor the honor students and all participants are to be at the ballpark by 2 o’clock

Good news for Donald Frances and a friend. He is the winner of the nurses sorority raffle. Donald get a trip on the cruise ship Inspiration. According to Ruth Leonard, the drawing took place May 6th

Two New Teachers Make Good news

St. Croix public schools have two new teachers with a special history. Juan and Edalia Nieves of Frederiksted will each graduate with bachelor’s degree on May 25 at the UVI graduation. They went to Central High School together and got married while studying at UVI. They took classes together and now they are going to be teachers in our schools. They are still awaiting their assignment’s but husband and wife will both be teaching and that’s good news for St. Croix.
