Bicycle Patrols are beginning on St. John

The police have just started patroling the streets of Cruz Bay St. John by bicycle. The patrols have been so successful on St. Thomas that the police decided to give them a try in Cruz Bay. Havensight Mall now has police bike patrols and so does downtown Charlotte Amalie during evening hours. Did you know that the police are recruiting right now for their next training class? Leading Causes Of Death

The leading causes of death in the Virgin Islands are heart disease, cancer and stroke. All three have very strong life style causes and you can make yourself less likely to die of these causes by improving your diet, quitting smoking and doing more exercise. Today is national Employee Fitness day and your health is vital to you and to everyone who works with you. We need you in your best physical shape.

Law Enforcement Day

Today is Law Enforcement Day. A day set aside by Congress to remember all law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. A memorial service is going on now at the Patrick Sweeney Pavilion. You will find the flags at half mast to honor the peace officers. It is particularly poignant this year in the Virgin Islands since a police officer took his own life yesterday.

National mental health month

It is national mental health month. Depression is a serios mental illness that may seriously disrupt a person’s mood for long periods of time. People with depression face periods of despair and hopelessness. Two out of three people who seek help get better. For more information call 774-7700. Literature is being distributed at the upper deck of Sunshine Mall today from 9 Am to noon.

VITEMA Plans

VITEMA announced that they have developed plans to deal with a future storm and trained a group of representatives of each government agency The plans will help the Virgin Islands be self sufficient for 72 hours after a storm.

Labor Grant

The department of labor has received a grant from the federal government for 1.4 million dollars to provide job search and placement services to the community.

Tourism Rate Card Data Due

Hotel and Guesthouses. The dept of tourism wants the form that states you current rates. Cherise Creque says send in your completed, signed, form so they can publish the upsoming rate sheet for 96-97season. Now the Daily News said it would be a grim summer. It really will be grim if your hotel isn’t in the listings. Make some good news for your hotel or guesthouse. Find the form, fill it in, sign and sent it in today.
