We Have a National Merit Scholar among us.

At the top of the news, Jesse T Harold, a senior at St. Croix Country Day has been selected as a National Merit Scholar. That is the top award a high school senior can achieve in national academic recognition.

Waste oil program

Here is news that will grease the skids. The waste oil program on St. Thomas has begun. Now all 3 of the BIG islands have oil drop off points that will keep waste oil out of our aquifer and the ocean. St. Thomas waste oil can be dropped off at Tutu Fire Station or the Bovoni Landfill. WAPA and Hess will reprocess the oil. This is for the public – and we should take our oil to the drop off site in clean sealed containers.

Education Bills

The Senate Education Committee is meeting this morning to consider several bills – the School violence Prevention Act, the Parents as Teachers Act, the Drop out Prevention Act and the Parents Participation Act.

Donation center for Montserrat

The donation center for Montserrat got a shot of donations yesterday. 200 cartons of donations. After the eight volunteers sifted through all the donations, it was evident that they still need more bedding, sheets pillows and dental hygiene products. The drop off site is at the USO building on the waterfront. The volcano has been calm over the last 24 hours.

Taxi Recognition

Our Taxi drivers are the on the front lines as our ambassadors of good will. Their attitudes a showcases on our whole society. Taxi appreciation evening is this Friday at 8 PM at Frenchman’s Reef. It is for everyone who operates a taxi. You’ll learn some new ideas to help you earn more. There are door prizes, a certificate and free food.

University of the Virgin Islands News

High School students, the University has a six week summer science enrichment program that will help you get a better grasp on science, computers, and laboratory work. Call 693-1232 for more information. The University announced that it was inducting 51 new members into the Golden Key National Honor Society.

  • Thursday the Cancer support group ‘I Can Cope’ has a meeting with Dr. Mark Kendall at the hospital cafeteria at 7PM
  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is meeting Saturday at 1:00pm at the St. Ursula Multipurpose Center St. John

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is coming. No one more important than Mom. The Women’s Resource Center says for every donation over $20 to the Women’s Resource Center, they will send a Mother’s Day Card to your favorite Mom. The contribution will help stop domestic violence. The card will tell Mom you love her on her day. May 8 is the deadline.
