The Governor is now a Doctor – Again

It was retired General Colin Powell who placed the academic hood over Governor Schneiders head in the ceremony in Washington honoring our Governor with an honorary degree from Howard University. The Governor is now a doctor of science. He already is a doctor of medicine.

Congressman Victor Frazer Honored

Congressman Victor Frazer received an honor this past week. The National Association of Equal Opportunity in Higher Education honored Congressman Victor Frazer as a distinguished graduate of Fisk University,

Zoning Map

The zoning map has been revised. Just before the Governor left for Washington, he signed into law legislation to revise the zoning map as it relates to Southgate farm in St. Croix. This will make two parcels suitable for use in business instead of residential.

National minimum wage

Did you know that our wage base is actually above the national minimum wage. That means that if the US Congress passes the law to increase the minimum wage that it would have a modest effect here. Most of our businesses already pay above the national minimum wage standard. Nevertheless, the proposed law would have a trickle down effect here, raising wages over time.

Block Grants

Local government agencies sent the governor 63 different proposals for community block grant spending. If we were to fund them all it would cost over 12 million dollars, but there is only about 1 million available in these block grants. Public hearings will be held tomorrow in St. John at the Boulon Center, Tuesday at the Senate chambers in St. Thomas and Wednesday at the Lagoon Street Senate complex in St. Croix.

  • The Lt Governor and Director of Insurance Gwen Brady announce a home owners insurance seminar on Saturday May 18th at Sugar Bay resort at 9 AM. It is free and open to the public. You will learn about insurance policies and insurance terms. The seminar will be duplicated on St. Croix on May 25th at the St. Croix Education Complex. 773-6449

Dancer Gets Scholarship

Finally this: Alexander Simon is one of the best dancers to come out of this region in some time. He has just won a full scholarship to train with the Joffrey Ballet in NYC this summer. He won two international dance examinations in Puerto Rico and the US Mainland. How do you get to have a scholarship? Alex Simon practices three hours per day. That’s how you make good news.
