Another Cover Story

Martin Public Relations announced that they have place the USVI on another cover of a magazine. That’s 10 magazine covers this year! They are earning their keep! This time Black Traveler Magazine has our islands on the cover of the magazine and the story says things like “each island has its own mystique” The article talks up Harbor Nights, Caneel Bay, the first woman ferry captain, the Ritz-Carleton and lots of great spots in these islands. Who Was Monitoring the Drilling ?

Who Was Monitoring the Drilling ? The drilling mud spill on St. Croix wasn’t reported to AT&T by the company that was hired to monitor for spills. Bioimpactis the company and at last nights hearings on St. Croix about the AT&T drilling mud spill, it was Bioimpact on the hot seat. They were supposed to monitor the drilling and they had to answer all the questions about why they didn’t report the damage until after it was too late. 03/12/97 9:00 AM

Holmberg In First Place

Peter Holmberg won the first round of the 33 Annual Congressional Cup in Long Beach California. In this race they compete in identical boats to test the teams and their skills rather than boat design. Holmberg is in for another round of competitive sailing today in the Congressional Cup. 03/12/97 9:12 AM

Water Island Demolition Contract Out

The first step to the demolition of the derelict hotel and catchment on Water Island took place today as the Bureau of Land Reclamation in Colorado began the process of selecting a contractor to remove the debris from that islands. The federal government is responsible for the removal of the derelict hotel and the construction of a new deep water dock. 03/11/97 1:46 PM

Lt. Gov. Mapp is in Washington at the Convention of Lt. Governors, then he is going to Florida for a convention of Insurance Commissioners. Senator Gomez is in Miami for the Sea Trade Cruise Ship Convention.

Brass-O-Rama Tune Chosen

The Music Committee of the Carnival Committee has announced the 1997 Heineken Brass-o-Rama test tune. OK Bands, start practicing Splendor on the Glory. All bands planning to be in the competition you are meeting at Carnival headquarters tomorrow at 6:00 PM. 03/11/97 4:15 PM

On the sore spot report:

The sore spot Hot Line rang this morning. Our caller says that on the road to Coki Point where the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort fence runs along the roadside, it floods whenever it rains. Someone was hurt there yesterday. Can anyone at Renaissance or Dept. of Public Works get this flooding problem fixed. 03/12/97 9:04 AM

Beck’s Beer Charity Golf Classic

The 14th Annual Beck’s Bar and Restaurant Golf Classic was announced today – it is coming up on April 20th. This year it will benefit the Nana-baby Children” home, in St. Thomas, the Boys and Girl’s Clubs of St. Croix and Kids at Sea on St. John. The goal is to raise $16,000 and Bellows International will administer the event so that 100% of the proceeds can go to the charities. 03/11/97 2:04 PM

Casting Call:

Flicks Productions has a casting call for an upcoming commercial. The casting session is Friday and Saturday on St. Thomas. They need boys and girls, ages 3 to 12, middle age men, athletic men and beautiful women are always welcome. On St. Thomas the casting call is at Flicks Prod at Doctor’s Park, Raphune Hill Friday from 3: 8 Saturday at Flicks from 10 in the morning to 3 after noon.   • Senate President Lorraine Berry reminds everyone that her youth symposium is coming up on Saturday March 15th on St. Thomas at Frenchman’s Reef and on Saturday March 22 on St. Croix. There are guest speakers come from Concerned Black Men and Concerned Black Women. And there is a star studded panel of local experts on education who will also speak along with Lorraine Berry herself. Busses will be available at Emancipation Garden, McDonald’s Tutu at 7:00 AM.
