American Eagle will Lower fares

This is great news. At yesterday’s press conference with SenatorVargrave Richards, American Eagle announced that they will drop airfares between St. Thomas and St. Croix by dropping the one way fare to $65 and the round trip price is under $100. They are also making a trip to San Juan more affordable by reducing the requirement for a three day stay to get the best price. Bulk rate tickets are dropping and the books are available in 15 ticket groups rather than 25. And no more airport surcharges. American Eagle boss Tom Del Valle said the airline will monitor the program to see if it increases the number of travelers.

In Washington – Insular Affairs Budget Increased

We are so used to hearing news of budget cuts, it is a real relief to hear that the congress is actually increasing the budget for the Office of Insular Affairs in the Dept. of Interior. Allen Stayman, the director of the Office of Insular Affairs said “A stable flow of funds from Washington to the islands is vital.” Among the continuing flows are an advance of 40 million dollars for the Virgin Islands against future tax revenues.

Senate Rules Committee

The senate rules committee met today. They passed Joyce Caron to join the Historic Preservation Commission and Mr. Evelyn Webster to join the Taxi Commission. They amended the Compulsory Auto Insurance Bill, approved it and forwarded the bill to the full body. They passed the bill to rename Strand Gade the Louis Shulterbrandt Gade, They passed the bill to name the fish market at Lionel Roberts Stadium the Joseph Paul Bryan Market. They turned back the lease between the Port Authority and Ferrol Trucking.

Tax Assessors Office is Moving.

The tax assessors office is closed on Government hill and it will reopen on Monday June 30th at its new location on the second floor of Builder’s Emporium in Estate Thomas. The phone number is still 776-8505

WAPA Approves Underground Feeders

The Governing Board of WAPA approved funding to put the electrical feeders underground to both the Henry Rholson and the Cyril King airports. The project will cost 158,000 dollars. And FEMA will pay 90% of the cost.

Good News from Delta Force

The Delta Force announced the recipients of their 1997 scholarships, Nicanter Gordon of Ivanna Eudora Kean School, Alphonse Jullion and Sharon Joseph of CAHS, Latticia Trotman of Sts Peter and Paul, Margarite Samuel and Dellon Cave of St. Croix Central. Also this good news, Germaine Paul one of Delta Force’s first year recipient is entering her junior year at South Carolina State

Cup Team Winning in Italy

Peter Holmberg’s sailing team is leading in the Match races in Italy. Sailing with John Cutler, Morgan Avery and Chris Curreri of St. Thomas, the team is leading going into today’s final match of the Trofeo Challenge Roberto Trombini Match Race. This is part of the crew who may be our America’s Cup Team.

Coming Up: The Virgin Islands will be represented in the DC Caribbean Carnival ’97 on Saturday June 28. The Image Band will be on the road pumping music to the people There are also entries from the New York based VI organization Freshwater Yankees. Later on Saturday there is a big VI jam with Image Band and Burning Flames. On Sunday there will be the big VI picnic hosted by the VI Association of DC

Water Island Report

What a lovely evening. I was alone on the beach with my three children. Not even the usual posse of dogs. The water was like silk and sand so fine, the sunset spectacular.
