A Virgin Islands Baseball team?

If you love Baseball, you’ll love this. Virgin Islands Baseball federation is putting together a team to compete in the First Caribbean Baseball Tournament. Our team will compete against teams from Cuba, Puerto Rico, DR, Mexico, Bahamas, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Workouts begin this coming week. The Tournament is coming August 16th in Aruba. 772-1570

Organic Act Day

It’s Organic Act Day. It is a territorial holiday, so territorial government offices are closed. The Senate is not meeting. Federal offices and most businesses are open. With Congress considering bills to amend the organic act, today is a good day to re-read the Organic Act.

Lady Lion

Shirely Quetel-Hendricks has been elevated to the regional chair of Lions Clubs International. She is the first woman to hold this office in an organization that used to be all men. She’s in charge of 22 Lions Clubs and 11 Leo Clubs from Here to St. Eustatius.

Contest Finalists

We have two finalists in the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Assoc. Essay contest. Of our 23 semi-finalists, Anwar Lockhart of Sts Peter and Paul and Joseph Hodge of Seventh Day Adventist made the cut. They are going to the Caribbean Cruise Conference in October to compete for the grant prize.

Folklife Festival

The Virgin Islands Cultural Heritage Institute is trying to reach all the people who participated in the Folklife festivals in 1990 and 1991. They want to host a new Folklife festival this August. Everyone who wants to help bring about a Virgin Islands Folklife Festival, you are meeting on Wednesday at Cultural Heritage Institute 774-9540

Kids Art in Museum

Some of our kids art work is going to Lille France to a museum. It is part of a US exhibit of children’s art that is going to be on display all summer in France, then go to the French Art Museum. Students in Phoebe Schwarts’ art class at the Berthe Boschulte School now have their creations in the museum.

Future Global Leaders

UVI is opening its second annual Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean. Twenty students from all over the region will converge on UVI Tuesday for a series of workshops seminars and speakers to prepare the 20 students for future leadership.

On the Calendar:

  • Priscilla Hintz, writes by e-mail to say American Red Cross St. Thomas/St. John needs some help letting you know about the upcoming Disaster Training Institute and Workshop Series. Various disaster relief topics will be covered. Shelter Operations, Disaster Communications, Disaster Health Services etc. The Institute will take place from Saturday June 22 to Friday 28. It will be held at the University of the Virgin Islands. Call Priscilla Hintz 774-0375.
  • Vietnam Vets Chap 591 meeting at 6 PM at Territorial Court
  • Inner Wheel Club is meeting in Tickles in Subbase on Monday at 6 PM all members please attend. 
  • There was an error in the letters to Headstart parents in St. John. The letters say to go to St. Thomas on June 19th, but the meeting for St. John parents is at the multipurpose room on St. John. Headstart parents don’t go to St. Thomas on Wed, your meeting is at the multipurpose room St. John

The Bar Normandie is closing after 60 years in Frenchtown. The good new is a blow out party on Sunday June 23 with Small’s Scratch Band. From 5 to 6 WSTA will be carry the party live. You are invited. Come tell your favorite old Bar Normandie story. Come tell it like it was.
