Our Crime Victims Commission Gets High Marks

Catherine Mills, Commissioner of Human Services announced that the local Criminal Victim Compensation Commission has won high honors from their federal parent organization, the Federal Office for Victims of Crime. The local office awarded $162,748 to 34 victims of crime in the Virgin Islands and did it in accordance with the federal guidelines. Good Work.

New Rotary District Governor is from the Virgin Islands

The regional Rotary Clubs have a new district governor and he’s a Virgin Islander from Charlotte Amalie. Mulchand “Mulo” Alwani is the new district governor and he has pledged the Rotary Clubs of the region will help fight poverty and crime. Alwani was induced in a ceremony attended by Rotarians from all over the region since the district includes 11 islands, 12 countries, and more than 2,000 members in 51 chapters.

St. John Says Send Cops

At last night’s Government Operations Committee Meeting on St. John the residents said they fear crime. Senator Almando Rocky Liburd said Coral Bay is like open season, with not enough police and no US Custom’s agents. Chief Elroy Brown called for 30 new police officers on St. John.

American Airlines Drops Restrictions

Senator Vargrave Richards announced that American Airlines has agreed to drop the requirement for an overnight stay to qualify for the 99 dollar round trip St. Thomas to St. Croix.

We have a Food Basket Price Measure

The good news is that the Dept. of Licensing and Consumer Affairs now has a food price index to measure changes in the cost of basic food basket of foods. The bad news, the price of food in the Virgin Islands rose by about 20% from 1994 to the present. The increase was 23% on St. Thomas and about 12% on St. Croix. The Food basket includes Milk, eggs, rice, goat, pork, chicken, fish, vegetables, fruit, and juice. 07/08/97 12:59

Hospital Ready for a Storm

Rev Charles Peters, Chairman of the Hospital Board announced that the hospital staff has completed the Hurrex 1997 Hurricane Simulation Exercise and they are prepared for any storm this year. He also announced the beginning of the completion of the roof project by installing the new air handlers on the roof clearing the way for the rest of the roof work to be completed. 07/08/97 10:26 AM

Hero of the Day

Good news from Colonel Eddy L. Charles a native of Dominica and a member of the Virgin Islands Army National Guard He graduated from the Senior Service Course at the top of the class among 60 students from 17 countries. He is lined up to be a general after taking this class. That’s Eddy Charles Good News.

Navy Band Coming

The US Navy Band is coming to St. Thomas and St. Croix. On Thursday and Friday the US Navy Show band will perform in the Tutu Park Mall and on Saturday they will perform in King’s Alley St. Croix and on Sunday there may be a noon concert at Sunny Isle.
