The National Organizations of Black Law Enforcement Executives is meeting in Miami this on July 21 at the Port of Miami. Black law enforcement executives are coming from all over the USA and our own Chief Americus Jackson is attending. Now Miami Police Major Roberson Brown is hosting an extravaganza to showcase the Caribbean islands. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism is organizing our presentation. We’re sending Mocko Jumbies, Java Wraps and Bush Tea. the Department of Tourism staff in Miami is working overtime on this. It’s Bastille Day

The French have an independence day that rivals July 4th for its tradition of freedom, liberty and equality. Yesterday it was dancing, fishing and enjoying the day in Hull Bay. Today there are ceremonies at the Senate at 4:30 this afternoon. There is a Bastille Day Social at the Joseph Aubain Ball Park at 6:00

Enighed Pond Plans Almost Complete

The Port Authority is going to send new plans for Enighed Pond Redevelopment to the Army Corp of Engineers later this week. The new plans are smaller in scale and will ease the congestion of Cruz Bay harbor.

US Marshalls Testing Tomorrow

The Search for new US Marshalls is over and the testing begins tomorrow at 5:00 PM – at the US Courthouse on St. Thomas and again on Wednesday at 5:00 PM – at the Federal building on St. Croix.

Aid for Montserrat

A Big Thanks you from the Montserrat Association of the Virgin Islands to the good people of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. They held an ecumenical service for Montserrat relief. At the service they collected $1,165 for relief efforts. Thank You St. Andrews. May God shine his light through you all.

Windsurfing National Championships

National Windsurfing Championships are getting going this week at Sapphire Beach resort with 200 professionals and amateurs windsurfers competing for the national title. This is the first time the championships are being held outside Continental US. And the media attention on our perfect sailing conditions – well, it’s good news.

Foster Parents of the Year

The Virgin Islands Human Services Dept. has been serving the people of these islands for 50 years. And under the roof at Human Services are the Foster Parents. In honor of the 50th anniversary, the Department held a dinner on Sunday honoring the foster parents. The Foster Parent of the Year Award was given to Miguelina and Leonardo Ayala for their dedicated service to children. There is nothing more important than taking care of the children.” That’s the best news of all.

Senator Bryan Questions WAPA Sale

Senator Adelbert Bryan wants to know why the government is going to spend a million dollars to study the sale of WAPA. He is asking Senate President Lorraine Berry to convene the Senate to look into this expense when we have so many other pressing needs. 07/11/97 7:38 AM

Furniture Store Bonding Meeting

We told you before that furniture dealers will have to be bonded. Now the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs is holding a special meeting to teach the furniture dealers what they need to know to get bonded. The idea is to protect consumers from unscrupulous furniture dealers so the bonding is good for everyone. The meeting is Monday July 21 at the Legislative Conference Room St. Thomas and on the 23rd on St. Croix 07/11/97 11:10 AM

Lions Youth Coming Here

There are 200 lions coming to St. Thomas, No it’s not the circus, its the Lutheran Youth Faith in Action group from Texas converging on St. Thomas under the sponsorship of our Lions Clubs. Lion President Shirley Quitel-Hendricks says the young people will be painting classrooms at the Dober school, going to the beach and attending church services.
