Governor Signs Legislation

Now it is law, the penalties for parking in a handicapped spot are going up. Governor Schneider signed the bill into law which also authorizes land acquisition along Harwood highway. The bill also clears the way for Banco Popular to build a new headquarters. He also signed the bill into law to permit the Port Authority to float 3.5 million dollars in bonds for the Molassas pier. He vetoed the 300,000 for summer youth employment.

Virgin Islands Advocacy Fights Discrimination

The Virgin Islands Advocacy Committee filed suit Thursday against Sunny Isle Cinema, Diamond Cinema, Cinema One and Blockbuster Video seeking their compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. They Committee says they will file additional suits next week.

Rotary Scholarship Winner

Rotary Club of Charlotte Amalie announced the winner of their 1997 Scholarship. Miss Nicole Scatliffe will take the award. She is attending UVI majoring in Business administration. The Rotary Club supports three other students, Esra Toussaint, Alrick Brooks and Melisa Flemming.

Senate Rules Committee Approves Two

The senate rules committee met in St. Croix and approved Mr. Eustace Brown to serve on the Public Television Board and Mrs. Debra Franklin-Maragh to serve on the Board of Psychology Examiners. They also heard discussion on two bills and a lease without taking action. 07/11/97 7:38 AM

Puerto Rico passes land for tax bill

Governor Schneider points out that the Puerto Rico legislature has just passed a new law to permit their residents to trade land for land taxes due to the government. The bill passed in Puerto Rico is similar to the one Governor Schneider has proposed in our legislature. 07/11/97 7:38 AM

Is Our Lottery All It Could Be?

Senator Hansen Wants to make our lottery more attractive. She says the Puerto Rico lottery attracts dollars from here, but we don’t sell many lottery tickets there. Why don’t we have a lottery for tourists where the tickets are sold on the WICO dock and the payout is just before the cruise ships sail in the evening. 07/11/97 7:38 AM

Senator Bryan Questions WAPA Sale

Senator Adelbert Bryan wants to know why the government is going to spend a million dollars to study the sale of WAPA. He is asking Senate President Lorraine Berry to convene the Senate to look into this expense when we have so many other pressing needs. 07/11/97 7:38 AM

Grant to Fight Violence.

The Virgin Islands Law Enforcement Commission has filed a grant application for 1.4 million dollars to fight juvenile crime. They want your ideas for programs to support. You can review the grant application at the LEPC Offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix Call 774-6400

Hospital gets New Gear

Partners for Health announced the donation of a new Hoyer Lift from the generous contribution of Ms Kathleen McGrath. The Hoyer Lift will be used on the fourth floor of the hospital. Special Thanks to Ms McGrath for the donation.
