It’s Independence Day

Today is Independence Day and all government offices will be closed. Most stores and businesses are closed. The Malls will be open with reduced hours. We will bring you the St. John Celebration of the 4th of July beginning at about 10:00 AM This is the 221st celebration of American Independence in 1776.

Election System Reform

The idea that we should reform our election system is open to public debate. There is a copy of the proposed election system reforms available at the Boulon Center on St. John, At the Baa Library and UVI library on St. Thomas and at the Williams Library and Petersen Library on St. Croix. Copies are also at the offices of the election system. Public hearings are slated for July 9th on St. John, July 10th on St. Thomas and on July 11th on St. Croix.

New Books for Emancipation Day

Virgin Islands Humanities Council is pleased to announce the availability of two new books that are important contributions to our understanding of Emancipation. St. Thomas In Early Danish Times is a series of original documents in translation into English of key historic material. Bondsmen and Freedmen is a selection of major articles and papers representing current scholarship on slavery and life in the Danish West Indies. Both books are available at book stores and at the Whim Museum and Fort Christian museum.

American Airlines Asked to Change Policy

Vargrave Richards is asking American Airline to change their advance purchase policy. He had understood that they were going to allow the 99 dollar fare right up to take off, but American Airline says the 99 dollar fare from St. Thomas to St. Croix is with one day advance notice.

Celebration

St. John Celebration of the 4th of July is roaring along. Tonight for the 4th of July the bands are Fusion and Jam Band, from 7 PM – to 2AM. Travelers to St. John are reminded not to park in the Red Hook Plaza Parking Area. Cars that are there may be towed. Special bus service will be available from Fort Christian to Red Hook to help alleviate traffic congestion going to the Festival on St. John. The bus will be available from 7:00 AM – on July 4th and continue through July 5th. J’Ouvert began at Pine Peace Basketball Court at 4AM , at 11 the Parade on St. John starts at the National Park Center and at 9:00 PM there are Fireworks on St. John in the Cruz Bay Harbor, at 2AM – Festival Village closes.
