Today is Martin Luther King Jr Day and it is the Day we Inaugurate the President

Itís 80 degrees in St. Thomas. At the top of the news, Today is Martin Luther King Jr Day. It is a holiday in the Virgin Islands. Banks, Government Offices and Vitelco are closed today. Most stores are open. The President has been inaugurated amid thousandís of visitors in Washington. A delegation of Virgin Islanders is in Washington for the inauguration of the President. Governor and Mrs Schneider sat with the rest of the governors at the inauguration. Senator Vargrave Richards is leading the senate delegation which includes Senatorís Burke, Redfield, Donastorg, and Comacho. Former Senator Luz James and Former Governor Farrelly and Mrs Harrigan-Farrelly are also in our delegation. The CAHS Mellowhawks Steel band entertained under Georgia Frances and Frances Callwood.

Grants to Fight Cancer

The Dept of Health has 5 year grant of $721,894 to provide free breast cancer and cervical cancer screening. The rate of cervical and breast cancer has doubled in the last decade. This program insures that all women get screened for cancer and treated early. Early detection really works.

Grants for Science Education

The National Science Foundation is looking for teachers to do innovative things with education and there are grants up to $25,000 to use new technology to bring new life to science teaching. Toshiba America has grants for teachers in grades 7 to 12 who are creating new activities with students. Information on both grants are available on the Internet and from our Dept. of education.

Americaís Cup Challenge Signs Corporate Sponsor Manager

The Americaís Cup Challenge announced that they had signed a contract with the nationís top sports marketing partner. Now the same people who managed commercial sponsorships for big corporations at the Atlanta Olympics are now working to find commercial sponsors for our Americaís Cup Challenge. Martin Luther King Jr. Tributes

We have received many messages about Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Senator Vargrave Richards shares his favorite quote from Dr King, We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. Sen Judy Gomez points to that quote ands he adds, that it tells us we must stand resolute against the forces that threaten to rip us apart as a community and stem the violence.” In Senator Roosevelt Davidís statement he calls on everyone to say a special prayer for those who died and those who continue to die in the struggle for freedom and equality.

Senator at Large Almando Liburd said, “Dr Martin Luther King Jr. serves as a model for all to emulate. He exemplifies the ideal of service. He embodies the most important ideal of human life – Love. Dr. King lived a life wholly devoted to struggling for the oppressed and the disadvantaged. He held firm in the belief that love is a more potent force than hatred. He always chose moral force over physical force.” That statement is from Senator Liburd.
