7 Million for Tourism Promotion

Governor Schneider announced that the tourism promotion contracts to date total almost 7.2 million dollars. The largest expense is to Lowe and Partners in NY who manage our media advertising. Next comes our public relations firm Martin Public Relations and there are smaller contracts for tourism promotion in countries where our market is growing.

Senate Committee on Government Operations Yesterday

The Senate Committee on Government Operations met yesterday in a long session. They decided not to open the WICO Board meetings to public scrutiny. Should WICO be subject to the same sunshine laws as other government operations. They say it is bad for business to make the business plans public. Senator Jones said the effort to open up WICO was driven by the Daily News not by the good of the company or the people of the Virgin Islands. They passed a bill to protect your primary residence from any debtor trying to satisfy a judgment by selling your home.

Senate Economic Development Committee is Meeting.

They are considering annual financial reports from major food vendors and a bill to exempt the legislature from voting on leases of Port Authority property.

St. Croix is saving $4000 per day

WAPA on St. Croix is saving over $4000 per day in fuel costs due to the use of the waste heat boiler that recycles excess heat to produce electricity. The savings will be passed onto the consumers as reduced bills.

Take CIGNA to court

The Governor is asking Attorney General Julio Brady to file suit in court over CIGNA’s withdrawal from the territory. The Governor says we had a legitimate agreement to extend health insurance for a year and he is expecting that agreement to be honored.

Firefighters Going to Get Training

The Virgin Islands Fire Service believes in training. Carlton Dowe points to the case of LeRoy Hermon Jr. who recently finished training in Florida at the State Fire Marshal’s Bureau of Fire Standards and Training. Dowe also says that neighborhoods are going to see visits from the Fire Service as they host pre-fire training for neighborhood organizations.

Jurors – Get you Checks

Did you serve on a jury between October 1997 and January 1998 – then you can come to the District Court and pick up your check for your service. That’s room 310 in District Court.

This years food fair is called Miss Lucia’s Treats in honor of Lucia Henley.
