Lockhart Caribbean is going Public

Lockhart Caribbean Corp. announced that the US Securities and Exchange Commission has approved the sale of 2 million shares of the company. Lockhart is officially opening a sale of their securities over the Internet at www.lockhart.com. This is the first time that a private business organized under the laws of the US Virgin Islands has made an offering of equity securities. Lockhart owns seven shopping centers and has seven projects under development.

Comacho Introduces Magistrates Court

Senator Comacho has introduced new legislation to create a magistrate’s court to relieve the court congestion in the Territorial Court. The Magistrates would hear small claims, traffic offenses, cases of littering. The bill goes before the Committee on Government Operations

Island National Refunds

Lieutenant Governor Mapp says he has released 484 additional checks from the Finance Dept. to pay for refunds and outstanding claims against Island National Insurance Company.

We’re going to the Movies

One of the nations largest movie rental companies is beginning a promotion for the US Virgin Islands that will reach over a million people in 14 states. West Coast Video is featuring the US Virgin Islands in their winter catalog and they have our posted up in their 500 stores. A coupon to enter a contest to win a trip to the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort is going out with every video rental. Wylie Whisonant Says it is a way to gain exposure at low cost to the territory.

Alternative School has Alternative Drainage

St. Croix Alternative School has good news They’ve opened a new water runoff around the basketball court, that will end the flooding of the basketball court.

Internet Discounts

Delegate Christian-Green announced that our schools and libraries are eligible for funds from the Universal Service Fund to get them 20 to 90 percent discounts on telecommunications services and other resources used for the Internet. The schools and libraries can apply via the Internet at www.slcfund.org.

Two Navy Ships Are Coming

We have two Navy ships coming today to visit the Virgin Islands. The USS Connoly is visiting Cruz Bay St. John and we have the USS Gonzalez visiting Crown Bay. Sailors from the Gonzalez will be doing a spruce up job at Addelita Cancaryn Junior High School today while the ship is in port.

Taxes are Due

The Governor announced that the Virgin Islands real property taxes will be due on February 28th of this year. They will be delinquent if not paid by March 31st. April 15th is the last day to appeal.

Human Services is Computerizing

The Dept. of Human Services is asking the public to bear with them as they go through a conversion to full computerization. The new computers will reduce waiting time, increase the speed of processing claims, give every customer a specific certification worker and track and monitor cases more effectively. It will take time, please be patient while everyone learns how to use the new systems.

Youth Commissioners to Serve Cabinet

The Governor has appointed a group of our youth to be assistants to the commissioners of government. The youth will have assignments with different branches of the government. They will get to see the government at work as well as inject the youth perspective into their assigned departments. The Youth Commissioners are Marie Freeman and Marcus Daniel of CAHS, Treman Wheatley of All Saints, Rodwell Arthur of Antilles School, Hedeyah Scoon of Cancaryn School, Cubie-Ayan George of Berthe Boschulte School, Javan Petersen of Sts Peter and Paul, Collin Roach of Ivanna Eudora Kean School and Crystal George of Julius Sprauve School

Water Island Report

The annual Auction is this weekend on Water Island. This is an occasion when we haul out of the attic all out dregs of our lives, bring them to the beach pavilion and sell them to each other. That lets us take all the dregs back to the attic and save them for next year. It all about shuffling around the junk. “It’s your turn to own this stuff!”
