Governor Says we have Audited Finances

The Governor announced good news. Our government’s financial records have been audited for fiscal year 1994. This means, for the first time ever, our government can give reliable information to the bond market and show investors the credit worthiness of our government. Now the Government’s finances are in a comprehensive standard form that complies with GAAP Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures. The Commissioner of Finance announced that her department would engage in a full renewal of their information technology to make all financial records available on a wide area network.

Full Senate Holds First Session

The Senate approved Liston Davis for Commissioner of Education and sent Wylie Whisonant’s nomination back to Committee. They voted to rename the road from J. Antonio Jarvis School to Bunker Hill the Maud Proudfoot Drive. Lorraine Berry announced the formation of the Legislature’s Women’s Caucus as part of Women Lawmakers Networking Day. 02/28/97 8:35 AM

New Landfill to be in Humbug

The Landfill plan is out. The St. Croix landfill site is on Hess land in the Humbug area. The government proposes to buy the site for $1 thanks to Hess. There are many steps of approval between now and a new landfill, but the site has been announced. In other trash news, the St. Thomas trash haulers say they want to be paid or they will quit hauling trash. Tuesday is a deadline to get paid a million dollars they say they are due – Oh and cancel the taxes due too. 02/28/97 8:35 AM

Water Island Progress

The Governor met with his Water Island committee. They announced that Water Island has been integrated into Department of Planning and Natural Resource’s regular surveillance, The roads are now included in the overall plan for roads. Fire emergencies are now part of the territory’s concern. Water Islanders can call 911 and get some official response now. And St. Thomas Administrator Levron Sarauw (sorrow) is now the Water Island administrator too. 02/28/97 8:35 AM

Holmberg is a Winner – Again

Peter Holmberg won again. He is racing and working our America’s Cup team in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit. He was first two days in a row. Holmberg credits his tactician for calling the course to they were first at the weather mark in both races. Smart guys. 02/28/97 8:35 AM

New Paint!

There’s lots of new Paint around us. Along Moravian Highway and Veterans Drive crews are painting the curbs a bright yellow and giving the road a facelift. There is new paint on Joe’s Discount Extra in Crown Bay. The dilapidated sign is gone. There is fresh paint on Black Utopia Lane going into Ft Mylner where Austin Petersen has updated his mile-long mural in bright colors. Take your sunglasses when you ride into Ft Mylner
