Virgin Islands America’s Cup Challenge Turns into Team Caribbean

The America’s Cup Challenge is growing. They are evolving into Team Ca and the first to join the challenge is the Club Nautico de San Juan. The San Juan Yacht Club is the first to sign on the Team Caribbean effort. The Steve Morton of the Cup Challenge says “What’s good for the Caribbean is good for us,” and “By combining resources we can be more competitive.” 12/03/97 9:11 AM

Senate Suddenly Interested in Revenue Sources

The Union contract made all the Senators sit up and take notice of the state of the fiscal crisis. The Non-majority is asking Senate President Lorraine Berry for a complete review of all revenue producing measures introduced this year. They need to find new revenue and they are asking to look at all the possibilities. In related news, Senator Hansen is calling a meeting of the Labor committee on Friday. The purpose is to write legislation to allow teachers to retire with full benefits after 20 years of service. 12/03/97 7:45 AM

Chester Edwards let it be known that he has received an award for successful completion of the grassroots organizing training program under the Young Democrats of American Chester took the training in Miami and he is getting ready to launch a voter registration drive and public information campaign.

There may be help for all the people who are having trouble with the Internal revenue Service. The National Audit defense Network is going to take ten of the most victimized cases where the IRS is browbeating a taxpayer and the Fund will defend the ten families until their tax troubles are over.

8 Companies vie to do Waste Project

It happens step by step and there is progress every day. There was an important meeting to bring all potential solid waste contractors together and get them ready for the RFP process. This is the next step in tackling our solid waste problem. Alicia Barnes asked the contractors to prove their qualifications to build a state-of-the-art solid waste processing plant. Next is the RFP and then contracts. Then work begins. The contractors included local firms like Lubin Roberts, and Island Roads, and global firms like Stone and Webster and URS Grinder.

Will the FSC Law Change?

The European Union has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization saying the American Foreign Sales Corporation Law is not fair. The Virgin Islands hosts 66% of all Foreign Sales Corporation’s in America so any change to the law could hurt us economically. The Department of State thinks our law complies with the World Trade Organization rules. 12/02/97 4:02 PM

We have a Christmas Tree in Washington

There is the national Christmas tree and there are the 56 small Christmas trees all around the national tree. One of those 56 trees is for the Virgin Islands and it will be lighted this Thursday in a ceremony at 5:00 PM – Washington Time. The Virgin Islands tree is decorated with art from local sculptor January Mitchell and the theme is flowers of the Caribbean. 12/02/97 4:02 PM

Governor Schneider Meets with Council on Disabled

The Governor held a meeting with his Interagency Coordinating Council to work on early interventions programs for families with infants and toddlers with disabilities. The federal government requires education for all handicapped children. The Council can advise and assist with implementing the law.
