We have a Queen and More Winners too

The Queen of Carnival has been selected amid a group of 8 very talented women, Tynell Frances took the top title and the Talent and Intellect titles too. Second runner up was Devaney Blyden who also won the best Evening wear title, Ashley Ruth Moolenaar was third runner up and Miss photogenic, Acia Brathwaite won Miss Congeniality. Rashida Hodge had the best historical costume and was voted Miss Cooperative.

Toddler’s Competition

The toddlers competition was on Sunday. A hearty congratulations to DanneÈ Grosvenor for taking top title in the Toddlers competition, followed by Keanna Mills and Kaya Mitla Kitnurse. We also had the greased pig catch on Sunday and 23 young people went home with the pigs they caught. There was no consensus on he best way to catch a greased pig. Senate Meeting Today

At 10:00 AM the Senate is in Special Session to consider the Governor plan to float new bonds. They are discussing the possible uses of the funds and they are debating these new bonds.

Baseball Team coming home.

This a special message to all parents of children on the baseball team that went to Santo Domingo. The team was detained at the airport and they are coming home tomorrow morning. You need to know your children are coming home earlier than planned.

Team Caribbean in New Zealand

This is a warm up for the America’s Cup Challenge racing and our Team Caribbean is in New Zealand to sail against many of the teams that will compete in the America’s Cup. On Friday Peter Holmberg and his local team won their first race against the Italian team and lost the next race to the French Team. Over the weekend they lost two races. They can still recover and need to rethink their tactics in a setting where the wind changes a lot. The Team Caribbean is composed of Peter Holmberg, Ben Beer, Dave Dutcher, Ian Exton, Maurice Krug, Morgan Avery and John Cutler of St. Thomas. From St. John come team mates Ernest Mattian and Mark James. Phillip Barnard joined the team from St. Vincent, Clint Brooks of Barbados and Kiko Dalmau of Puerto Rico. The Team is sponsored by American Airlines and GANT USA.

New Life Form Discovered

A team of US and Cuban scientists has discovered a dozen new species of invertebrates in the shallow waters off Cuba. The center for Marine Conservation and the Caribbean Bio-diversity Program wanted to fill in the gaps in our knowledge about marine life and they looked to Cuba with the regions richest waters. 15 new species are shrimp-like crustaceans. This is the Year of the Oceans and you are reminded that Earth Day is coming up on Wednesday.

School Calypso Revue

Right now, at J. Antonio Jarvis School is the third annual Calypso Review on Campus with a cast of 6 Jr. Calypsonians. Lady Tiff, Lady Thunder, Lady Dee, Mighty Reds, Calypso Dezz and Lady Jaguar. Brownie is the MC and the sponsors are Lubin Roberts Construction, St. Thomas Dairies, Barbel Enterprises, Joe’s Discount, Gertrude Melchoir, Senator Roosevelt David and Leslie Smith.

Calendar

This is National Library Week through the 25th. The Friends of the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library have an open house from 4 to 6:00 PM. It is also Reading Is Fun Week through the 25th. Today is the deadline to submit your essay in the St. Thomas St. John Arts Council Essay Contest about the film Amistad. The essay is to be no more than 1500 words and the theme is “How did seeing the film Amistad change how you view yourself, your world, your history and your culture? ” Big Thank You to Dr. Boaz from Nikki Tyler of Mocko Jumbie Jamboree 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM Carnival Show for Roy L.
