Carnival Went out with a Grand Finale
Saturday night’s fireworks set Hassel island on fire in a display of fireworks that engulfed the North west end of that Island. There is good news, the fire service brought the fire under control during Sunday using some of their new fire fighting equipment. The submersible pump let them pump seawater to fight the fire. And Navy helicopters dumped tons of water on the blaze. The fire is still smoldering but it is under control. The fire service gets full credit for a spectacular job.

St. Croix had its own Fire
The Hassel island fire pales by comparison to the fire on the south side of St. Croix which burned nearly 1000 acres of the south side. That fire was brought under control on Sunday.
Fire Service Says we have fire hazard conditions.
There is a lot you can do to insure the safety of your home. Make sure all brush and dry plants are at least 50 feet from your home. Smokers, please be careful with your cigarette butts. Welders, please be careful with your work. No one should have an open fire. Oh, and this good news maker. William Dilks was helping the fire service fighting the fire on Hassel island and lost his wallet, we have it here with the cash at WSTA lost and Found.

Hero of the Hour
It is dedicated guys Daryl Matthews of the fire service who put this fire out. Darly got off duty on Friday for the parade, got called up for the Hassel island fire, He had no ride, so he rode his 10 speed bike to the fire station to go fight the fire. He was on the fire through 2 AM Sunday morning. Thanks Daryl.
Larry Mann is the good news maker of the hour. Larry was on Hassel island when the fire started and was on the scene working side by side with the firemen. Larry stayed through the weekend hiking the thorny brush to fight the fire. His work helped save a piece of the Hassel Island National Park. Good work. Larry Mann. And thanks to all the volunteers who fought the fire.
Here are some more heroes of the Carnival. The nurses were on duty at the hospital. While everyone was out having fun, the nurses were on the job. Thanks to all nurses.
