Senate Session – Duncan Day
The Senate met yesterday. They passed a bill to name April 25th Timothy Theodore Duncan Day in the Virgin Islands. They overrode the Governors veto of a tax amnesty bill which means businesses have 90 days to pay back taxes without penalties. They argued over cricket as Senator White made an appeal for funds to complete the Nadir bridge and not Cricket when we have a flooding problem. They adjourned abruptly at 8:00 PM. They are not meeting today but they have a special session on Monday.

Governor Has Hess Agreement
The Governor has sent down an agreement regarding Hess and he is asking them to vote the plan up or down. The agreement between Hess and The Venezuelan Oil company expires in late spring and the Governor says we need to act or lose the deal.
Hotel Association – Nine Million in Taxes
The Hotel Association did a survey of their members to ask how much hotel tax they paid. 6 million in Calendar year 1997 and they are projecting a hotel tax of 9 million 320 thousand for calendar year 1998
Landfill Clean Up
The landfills may get their first clean up. No it isn’t the final solution to the landfill problems, but the Government signed a contract with Caribbean Commodities to remove scrap metal from the Bovoni and Anguilla Landfills. The company will also pay the Government for the metals they remove from the landfill

Ulla Muller School raffle results are in. First prize is a computer and it goes to Leroy Hanley, 2nd prize goes to Milton Moreland Jr. a round trip to Puerto Rico and Tiffany Huggins wins a bicycle.
Tourism Road Show
The Virgin Islands Callings program of the Department of Tourism is beginning April 29th with a road show to promote the Virgin Islands to travel agents and potential visitors. This year the Tourism sales crew will visit Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Houston and Dallas in the April set, then later road shows will target the Midwest and northeast.
We have a Winner
The National Beta Club of honor students conferred its top award on Aslin Leger a 6th grader at the Edith Williams School. She wrote an excellent essay in the national writing contest. She is the youngest of the 9 national winners. Her essay will appear in the March 1998 issue of Beta Journal and it will be distributed to all beta Club members.

Navy Show Band Coming to St. Croix
The 150th Anniversary of Emancipation Commemoration will have one more major attraction. The US Navy has agreed to send their show band to perform for the 150th Emancipation Commemoration events. And the Show Band will be joined by Navy ship USS South Carolina which will be in St. Croix in July for the festivities. We also have a ship here now, the USS Coast Guard Cutter Le Gare will be in St. Croix from today through the 19th
David Jones To Host Symposium
Senator Jones is concerned with the Virgin Islands Economy and he is sponsoring a forum to discuss the economy. The idea is to air the Jones Plan and get your input on how to re-invigorate the local economy.
