Another Victory for Arah Lockhart and Champagne Chandler

It is getting to be a regular event. Elskoe and Associates winning the King and Queen of the Band Contest. Last night Arah Lockhart wont he Queen title and William “Champagne” Chandler took back the title that he lost last year. Hugga Bunch was Second place and Party Time placed third. Arah Lockhart says this will be her last year as a Queen competitor. In the junior division, Return of the Peacock and Sunday Children tied for the top title.

No Action on Long Bay Land

The West Indian Company says they still don’t have any formal proposal for the development of the land at Long Bay, but they are not going to open the topic to public discussion. WICO spokesperson Ed Thomas says they will not be entertaining open public comment on the development plans.

Governor Meets To Resolve Nazareth Housing

The Governor met yesterday with the relevant authorities about the remaining families living in the Nazareth emergency housing. 18 families will move to Estate Ross others will be places in units owned by the Housing Authority. Some of the others will get rent assistance to live in regular housing.

Carnival Leave

The Governor has issued Carnival leave to non-essential employees on Wednesday April 29th from noon to 5:00 PM for the food fair — also on next Thursday for J’Ouvert, and Friday May 1 for the Children’s parade There are parking restrictions in effect during carnival. If you park in diagonal space along the waterfront, leave a lane open for emergency vehicles and don’t block the access ramps. The tow truck operator says he has lots of parking in the impoundment lot. He sounds hungry to me.

Clean Up Coming to Coast Guard Dock

The Port Authority announced that they are engaging in a clean up of the area around the Coast Guard Dock. All abandoned vehicles, boats and other material must be removed by Monday of this coming week.

Head Start Registration

Head Start is recruit for the next school year. If your child is between 3 and 4 years 9 months, they can get in Head Start. Register at the Head Start Centers or at the Knud Hansen Complex

New Port Approved for Red Hook

The Army Corp. of Engineers has given its approval to a plan to build a new port facilities in Red Hook., The plan would create a new passenger terminal, a new dock for 4 passenger ferries, a new cargo dock, and a rearrangement of the parking facilities. The new facilities will be built over the water to the east of the current facilities.

Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs Food Survey

The results are in from Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs on the food basket survey. The winner is Plaza Extra on St. Croix ahead of Sunshine Supermarket and Pueblo. On St. Thomas, Plaza Extra had the best prices with Pueblo Four Winds very close behind. Several products in the survey showed dramatic increases in cost.

Lockhart School Walk-a-thon is coming up on Saturday beginning at 7:00 AM at the Grand Union Parking Lot – the walk will go to Brewer’s Bay for a family fun day with games, activities, ffood and drink. That’s Lockhart School Walk-a-thon Commoloco is moving to new offices in the Lockhart Shopping center. They are moving out of the waterfront location to space in the reconstructed Lockhart mall. They will continue to have an office in Ft Mylner. Hospital Street on St. Croix is being repaved today from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM – the road is open but motorists are urged to use alternative routes. Veterans Councilor Julian De Jesus is available to aid veterans on St. Thomas at Nisky Center from 8:30 AM – to 2:00 PM -. On Friday he is on St. Croix at Estate Richmond. And Derrick Williams of the Employment Service is at the Veterans Center in Nisky Center today to help vets find the right job. UVI Small Business Development Center has a workshop on St. John today. This is individual counceling and help in marketing, financial strategies, writing a business plan, starting a business, funding, personnel management and other small business needs. Owners and managers can schedule appointments by calling 776-3206 During National Immunization Week there are free vaccinations for infants and toddlers at the Sunshine Mall Heineken Brass-O-Rama 8:00 P.M. Big news – Alex bought another boat. Yes, that’s right, the man whose last boat sank 4 times in 4 months has finally broken down and bought a new boat. Eleven foot Boston Whaler. OK. It can’t possibly sink. We’ll see.
