Parking Lot Project Protest – Stopped
The parking lot at King’s Wharf Christiansted was closed yesterday as bulldozers began ripping up the asphalt. The closure has set off a wave of protest and letters to the park service insisting that the work stop. Members of the House Resources committee are asking that funds be appropriated to resurfacing the parking lot and that title to the land be turned over to the territorial government.

School Bucs Program is Over
The prize money is on the way. Tutu Park Mall sponsored the School Bucs program where every purchase at the mall was credited to the buyers favorite school. The Mall says they are inundated with requests for funds and they made the facilities available this way to aid the schools. Gomez school has the top percentage of participants winning 19% of the funds or $2850. E. Benjamin Oliver School is next winning $2,250 and Lockhart wins $1500.
Governor Schneider met with St. John Action Committee
The Governor met with the St. John Action Committee and reported that there was progress on the development of the Enighed Pond Cargo Port project. He also said that they badly needed waste water treatment plans is in progress to meet the requirements of the EPA.
United Way Hits Goal Plus!
United Way can be pleased to have hit their goal this year – plus a little more. The members met on March 27th to hear Yannick Bayard report on the conclusion of this year’s campaign. United Way raised 495,825.28 which is 104.3 per cent of their original goal. Bayard thanked the hundreds of volunteers from all segments of our society for their help in surpassing goal.
Archeology and Historic Preservation Division Moves
The Department of Planning and Natural Resources Archeology and Historic Preservation Division is moving to new quarters in the Knud Hansen House at #17 Kongen’s Gade in the former location of the Tax Assessor.
Conservation Data Center Has New Database
The Conservation Data Center will unveil its new Biological and Conservation Database on Friday at 3:00 PM in Room 310 of the Classroom Administration Building on St. Thomas. The database provides data on locations, status, legal protection and property ownership for special of conservation concern. There are only 72 databases like this one in the whole US and ours is useful for conservation planning, sharing information regarding flora and fauna in the Virgin Islands.
Job Help Coming
Dept. of Labor will hold a job search and preparation awareness workshop on Friday for people who are seeking jobs. The topics include resume writing, testing awareness, employer expectations and job search strategies. The workshop is tomorrow April 3rd at Windward Passage 776-3700.
New Franchise Tax Forms
The Director of Corporations and Trademarks says that there is a new franchise tax report and annual report forms available from the office of the Lieutenant Governor. The new form is a one page report. and meets the requirements of the VI Code.
Deadline Extended
Employers have some extra time to complete their wage and tax reports. The reports must be post marked by May 4th. And employers are reminded that they must comply with the territories Unemployment Insurance Act.

Water Island Report – Alex Comes Clean
OK, It is the day after April Fools Day and I have to come clean. I wrote two phony press releases and stuck them in Lee Carle’s pile and he read them as real news. There’s no grant to build a bridge to Water Island and the ICM Party did not endorse Governor Schneider. After Lee read these phony news items, other radio stations picked up the stories and rebroadcast them as though they had original sources. Well April Fool on you too. I won’t do it again. And remember – Lee Carle is the news and information leader of the Virgin Islands. He is a dedicated public servant. He has the best sources, and the most accurate news. It took a lot of work to fool him April Fools Day. But it’s all my fault. I made the funny news.
