Port Authority to Clean Up Coast Guard Dock
The Port Authority says they are going to clean up the whole area around
the Coast Guard Building on the waterfront. There are a variety of boat
wrecks and debris that are unsightly. The Port Authority says it is time
to make this area look perfect. If you don’t move your boat in the Coast
Guard Dock area by today it will be considered abandoned property.

Two New Projects Coming
The Government is seeking bids on two major projects. One is to rebuild
the schools that were destroyed in the hurricanes. The pre-bid
conference is March 30th. Sealed bids are due April 6th. The Government
is also taking bids to build the Cruz Bay Wastewater treatment plant.
There is a pre-bid conference on April 14th and bids are due on April
28th
Rotary Reading Room to Open
The Rotary International President is in town and he is going to be part
of a ceremony today to open the Rainbow reading room in the Bovoni
Housing Community. The project was developed by Rotary East with
co-sponsorship from Rotary Club of Glen Ellen Illinois. The center is
stocked with books and art supplies and will encourage the youth of
Bovoni to read and study.
WAPA On the Way to Year 2000 Compliance
WAPA has sent all of its financial staff to training and they will have
a new financial system in place by the first of January. While the Year
2000 may seem far away it is only 644 days to January 1 2000 and WAPA
says they will be ready – a year early. They have a committee to review
all of the technical systems. They are testing systems that the
manufacturers say are OK, but WAPA is taking no chances. Is your office
ready for the Year 2000?
Graduating Seniors Make Who’s Who
13 graduating seniors at UVI have been selected to be in the Who’s Who
of American Universities and colleges for 1998. They are Taisha Browne,
Floyd Charles, Natalie Fahie, Kala Fleming, Michelle C. Fredericks, Joan
Johnson, Rondie E. George, Lester K. Hanley, Elvira L. Smith-Herbert,
Seraphine Pitt, Judity Yolanda Richardson, Raynise A. Smith and Ethyln A
Warner. They join the top students from 1900 institutions of higher
learning from all states and territories. To be selected they must be
academically excellent and demonstrate community service as well.
Home Port Feasibility Study
Senator Petrus says he is pleased that the Governor signed the bill into
law to conduct a feasibility study for the creation of a
state-of-the-art trans-shipment port on St. Croix and a plan for a home
port for a cruise ship. Petrus says we need to diversity the economy and
this is a critical step in that process.
House Committee Passed Transportation and Infrastructure Bill 69-0
The delegate announced that the House Committee on Transportation and
Infrastructure passed the Inter-modal Surface Transportation and
Efficiency Act with 16 million dollars for the Virgin Islands to
complete projects to relieve traffic congestion in downtown. Virtually
all of our major road construction projects come from the earlier
version of this bill. In other news, the delegate had congratulations to
the Department of Education for their implementation of the Internet in
our schools. It is like bringing the Information Superhighway to our
youth.
