Governor’s Press Conference

The Governor held a press conference this morning with Dato Tan Hock to discuss the proposal to develop the Yacht Haven Area. Their architects are already familiar with St. Thomas having done the design of the Ritz Carlton Hotel here. The proposed facility will be a 200 million dollar investment with 300 room hotel, 100 condo units, restaurants, a public park and promenade and more open facilities. They also discussed the Hess agreement and the need for the oil refinery to be able to process new crude oil to remain viable. There are over 2000 new jobs to be added to St. Croix with the building of the Coker plant. He also commented that the new enterprise zones in Frederiksted and Christiansted will make a big difference and it is a change we really need to aid the local businesses that are already there and to attract new business to the area.

Senate Voted on Blue Cross

The Senate met yesterday to hear about the proposal to insure government workers health with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the Virgin Islands. Lieutenant Governor Mapp said that their business license is all in order, they have posted the necessary bond and meet all requirements of the law. The insurance will allow patients to go stateside and be treated as customers of Blue Cross in those states too. Blue Cross officials plan to hire local residents, computerize their claims processing and they will offer health insurance to the general public too.

The Senate met yesterday and heard all the details about the proposed health insurance plan from Blue Cross. But they couldn’t vote due to a pair of initials on an addendum that were not full signatures. So they met again today to vote on the plan. And approved the plan today.
