Senate Passed the Limited Liability Corporation Act
The Senate met yesterday and passed the revised Limited Liability Corporation Act. They added four amendments the governors wanted to “fine tune” the original bill. These changes will bring Limited Liability Corporations under the Territorial Court jurisdiction, another clarifies tax exempt status and IDC benefits. They also added a list of fees for forming these companies. Today they will consider the Limited Liability Partnership Act today. Senator Petrus’ bill to force doctors to take medical insurance did not pass.

AT&T Announces Local Internet Access
AT&T made an announcement today that it is initiating local telephone access to the Internet from a local point of presence in the Virgin Islands. They are going to be offering 56 kilobit per second data service. Hal Borns of Virtual VI says he is pleased with the new high speed access. He’s been testing the service for some time and say it is excellent and very fast.
Vitran to Expand Route to UVI
University students will get a small boost from VITRAN as the bus service announced it is extending bus service at the university to include the library and dormitories on the St. Thomas Campus. Busses will turn right at the UVI roadway and travel past the east dorms, tennis courts, business office, faculty housing and physical plant before ending at Brewers Beach.
President’s Day Charter Flights
Three resorts are teaming up to bring charter flights to St. Thomas for the President’s Day weekend. Renaissance, Frenchman’s Reef and Wyndham are chartering a jet to fly round trip from JFK in NY to St. Thomas for the holiday.
Census Studying Virgin Islands Business
The Dept of Commerce is conducting a census of businesses in the Virgin Islands. They’ve sent 3000 local businesses a special survey form. The reports are due back on February 12th All business owners are asked to help by completing the economic census. The results help update our economic indicators and helps businesses study our economic opportunities.
Student Art to go on Display
The art students of Ivanna Eudora Kean School are going to exhibit their art work at the Hospitality Lounge in Charlotte Amalie during the month of February. The display will feature a wide variety of media including water color, oil, fabric, collage, mosaics, relief and original prints. The students Christmas cards will be for sale too.
Emancipation Activities Begin This Weekend
Saturday will be the first day of the Emancipation Commemoration. Everything begins with a traditional Virgin Islands Breakfast in Emancipation Garden at 8:30 AM and there’s a march from Market Square to Emancipation Garden at 9:00 AM. The Governor will speak at 10 and introduce the members of the Emancipation 150 Commemoration Commission. On Sunday the Governor will kick off Emancipation year at Cruz Bay Bandstand at 4:30 PM –
Senate Essay Contest
The Senate is conducting an essay contest as part of the 150the Commemoration of Emancipation. The theme is this. July 3rd 1998 will mark the 150th anniversary of emancipation. If freedom is measured by the absence of violence, ignorance and fear, are we truly free? – Write about that in 300 words and get it into the Legislature by February 28th. There are prizes, generous prizes.
Amistad reading Available
There is so much interest in the movie Amistad that the Humanities Council is offering a set of readings for classroom discussion. Copies are available to teachers at the Curriculum Center and the general public can find copies at the Baa Library, Sprauve Library and the libraries in Christiansted and Frederiksted.
Internet And the Arts on St. John
The Sprauve library is got a grant from the Benton Foundation that is to help the arts serve the communities through the Internet. The Sprauve library will host classes in the Internet Wednesday the 28th at and Thursday the 29th.
School Nurses Day
Today is School Nurse Day in the Virgin Islands. We honor the nurses who tend our children’s health. The control communicable disease through immunization, monitoring, early detection and reporting contagious diseases. They also give our children high quality hand’s on health care. Hats off to the School Nurses.
