Advertising to Begin
The Department of Tourism announced that they are beginning their annual mid-winter advertising campaign in the Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington regions. We will be airing 23 commercials per week are reaching 81 million people. The ads will appear in shows like Sienfeld, NYPD Blue, ER, X Files, the Today Show and Good Morning America.

Governor Schneider Offers State of the Territory
The Governor will deliver the annual State of the Territory address this evening at 7:00 PM. It is widely assumed that the Governor will speak to our economic situation. He also says he has a number of important announcements to make this evening. While WTJX has a problem with the transmitter and will not be broadcast the address, but it will be on cable Channel 10, the government channel, and channel 5 in St. Croix. WSTA Will carry that address live at 7:00 PM.
Fonsie files Suit
Senator Adlah Fonsie Donastorg says he is fed up with the government’s failure to pay tax refunds. He is filing suit in the Territorial Court to force the government to set aside 4.5 percent of all revenues to pay tax refunds. Fonsie says the law calls for the government to save from current revenues to pay the taxes and is not complying with the law.
Labor Gets Computer Grant
The Dept. of Labor is getting 2.9 million dollars from the US Dept. of Labor to replace computers, buy new software, train employees and get the Dept. into compliance with the year 2000 problem.
Roads to get Resurfaced
Dr Delegate Christian-Green announced several federal grants had been delivered to the Virgin Islands to do major road work. The road from Tutu Valley to Smith Bay, Old Tutu to Four Winds, Mandella Circle to McDonalds, Jarvis school to Alton Adams Drive, Rhymer Highway from Donoe to Mandahl and sections of the road from Bordeaux to Nadir Race track. The work will include Hot Asphalt concrete paving and wedge leveling, Manhole adjustment and sidewalks where needed. And it is all federal dollars.
Good Press for St. Croix
St. Croix got good press. Rodale’s Scuba Diving magazine ranked the top dive spots in the world and St. Croix is 4th overall in the Caribbean Atlantic. The British Virgin Islands came in 8th. The USVI came in second for Best Snorkeling and St. Croix is second for the best shore diving and among the best for beginners.

St. Croix Abattoir was scheduled to be closed this week, but that has been changed, It is open this week and will be closed from January 26 to the 30th. St. Croix Federation of Teachers will hold a general membership meeting on Monday January 12th at 3:30 PM – at the Alfredo Andrews Auditorium Adult Education Classes begin on January 13th and registration is going on now for typing, computer classes and basic education. 774-6899 There is an exhibit of art from the students of the School of Visual Arts and Careers. The exhibit is open at the Fort Christian museum. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is meeting on at 6 PM at E. Benjamin Oliver School in formal attire. Call 775-4683 Virgin Islands Institute for the Performing Arts will begin registering students for the spring session on Monday January 12th from 3 o’clock to 6:00 PM – Classes are offered in Ballet, Tap Gymnastics, Drama, Theater, Voice, Piano, Modeling, Hip-Hop, Judo and Creative Arts.

The Chamber of Commerce says “Expect Nothing – We Have Lots of That.” At the last meeting of the Water Island Chamber the guy who empties the coin box in the phone booth couldn’t make it. Lacking a quorum (in fact – lacking any members) the Chamber meeting was canceled. No News is good news.
