Delegate Appoints St. John Representative
The delegate has appointed retired police officer Harry A. Daniels as her special assistant for St. John. Her office on St. John is now open and the phone number is 693-9143. Daniel is a member of the Board of Education and the Board of Elections and now will work for the delegate.

Busses back on St. Croix
The school busses are rolling this morning on St. Croix. A dispute over money at the bus company has been resolved. Liston Davis says a student was arrested yesterday trying to take a knife to school at CAHS. Davis says they are cracking down on weapons at school. He has a 12 point plan to reduce violence in the schools and it is already working.
Police to Get Checks
The police officers on St. Croix can pick up their checks for their uniform allowance and the checks for St. Thomas police should be ready next week. The funds are coming from the imprest fund the Governor set up and will allow the police chiefs to buy essential equipment at their discretion.
Paiewonsky Nomination Stopped
The Senate Rules Committee met yesterday regarding the nomination of Louis Paiewonsky. The committee decided not to recommend Paiewonsky for the post of head of the Industrial Development Commission. Lorraine Berry says Paiewonsky does not have the credentials, the political maturity or the professionalism to head the IDC.
Lieutenant Governor Mapp Talks about CIGNA Today
Lieutenant Governor Mapp will hold a press conference today at 10 AM at the video teleconference to announce his decision regarding CIGNA and the continuation of health insurance. We will have a report for you in Lee Carle’s NewsDay.
Busy Day at Government House
The Governor signed a number of contracts yesterday. Among them is a contract to set up a recreational facility and youth center at Bonne Esperance St. Croix. The St. Croix Youth Rehabilitation Center is getting a new pre-release housing facility. The Kirwan Terrace community center will get rehabilitated. Anglican Outreach got a grant to run an after school program at 7th street in Sugar Estate and the Herbert Grigg Home is getting funds for an assistant attending physician.
We got a Thank You from Roosevelt Roads!
The commanding officer of Roosevelt Roads thanked us for the hospitality we gave to the Lewis B. Puller during their visit here over Christmas. The adopt-a-sailor program took in 24 sailors and the Navy League was cited for their reception for the crew. Captain Stark said he was impressed with the security measures takes to insure the crew’s safety. No crime, good hospitality and a happy Navy commander. That’s good news.
Amistad is coming to St. Thomas
The tickets for the movie Amistad are on sale and they are hot. The St. Thomas St. John Arts Council is hosting the premier on January 14th at 7:30 PM – This is the movie about a slave revolt on a slave ship in 1839. Any arts council member can sell you a ticket.
PERB Rules for Teachers
American Federation of Teachers President Glen Smith is pleased with a decision from the Public Employees relations Board. The decision orders the Department of Education to notify the legislature of the requirements of the contract with the teachers and implement the increases in pay. Glen Smith says the Government can not omit our increases from the budget.
Caribbean Dance School is Reborn
They were on the verge of closing the Caribbean Dance School until an anonymous donor and Nisky Center came to the aid of the school. registration for classes begins on Friday and Saturday of this week at the new studio in Nisky Center. 778-8824

The Board of Directors of the Finance Authority will meet today at 10:00 AM – at Government House The Dept of Labor Job Service Division will close today at 1:00 PM – for the staff to attend a training workshop. The Governor’s State of the Terriritory Address comes up on Monday. WTJX reminds you they will broadcast the address live on Channel 12. Monday at 3:00 PM – And Saturday TJX will broadcast the best of the children’s parade at 6:00 PM -. A Big Thank You to the men on the road crews and their supervisors. It is nice to clear the roads for the President, but it is just as important to clean the roadsides in less obvious place. The roadside crews are working through the Krum Bay area making that road look so much better. The litter is being picked up, the brush is gone and the place looks a lot better. Thanks guys.
