Good Morning Mr. President. Welcome back to St. Thomas. Here’s your special report. America is OK today. So don’t worry about it today. El Nino is drenching California, but FEMA is ready if it gets bad. The weather in Washington is terrible. 18 degrees last night. That’s normal for Washington climate. Not much better in Little Rock.
It’s good to have you on St. Thomas where the weather is perfect and everyone is hospitable. Now you roll over and take another snooze, take in a round of golf and take the rest of the day off. Oh, and it’s a good idea to put a deposit down on the cottage now for this time period – next year.

Governor Welcomes President
The Governor welcomed the President Clinton proclaiming days from January 1st to the 4th as “President William J. Clinton Week” in the Virgin Islands.
Governor Responds to Audit
The Governor also put out a statement on the Federal audit of the Territorial government. The audit puts the government debt at 570 million. The Governor says the audit shows nothing new. Finance officers had discussed all of the figures before. And the auditor found no misuse of funds The Governor wants the senate to act on the revenue producing measures before them. The Governor also noted in a statement that the government made payroll on the day before New Years making it through the three paycheck month. He promised no pay-less paydays in 1997 and he delivered.
Senate to Hold Hearings on Paiewonsky
The Senate Rules committee announced a hearing for January 8th when they will take up the nomination of Louis Paiewonsky to head the Industrial Development Commission. They are also going to consider the bill to trade real property for taxes and a bill to increase the bond ceiling for WAPA
It was a Generic Festival
Generic is the Calypso king of St. Croix today. He took after taking first place in the Calypso Monarch competition. He bashed it out with the finalists using social commentary and rhyme to get the audience of several hundred clapping along. Generic bested Figgy and Nikki Brooks for the title. The King and Queen of the Band were also selected with the duo of J&J taking the title.
On the Calendar
Today festival continues on St. Croix and the banks and government offices are closed. The Annual Children’s Parade will be held at 10:00 from the corner of King St and Fisher St to the finish at Fort Frederick. Motorists are reminded that there will be no cars on the parade route today. WTJX will have the parade on live at 11 Am and rerun the same parade next Saturday at 6:00 PM
Water Island Report
Finally this, President Truman said if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog. And the dogs of Water Island saw the President’s dog Buddy yawn yesterday evening. The dogs issued a special invitation to Buddy to spend a day on Honeymoon beach on Water Island where dogs run free.
