Challenge of the Carols Big Hit

Almost 500 people came out for the Challenge of the Carols this Christmas morning. And the music included traditional Christmas carols, local home grown favorites and Caribbean tunes too. Hard to say who had the top singing skills; Salvation Army, Hapless Hopeless Carolers, Frenchtown Community Choir. Hard to say it was all so beautiful.

Soufriere Hills Had an Eruption

There are satellite images of Montserrat that show a major eruption at 3:30 AM this morning. The prevailing winds will take a cloud of ash over our area by late today. The winds will also keep most of the ash in the air.

Governor Meets with Police and Budget Officials.

The Governor met on Wednesday morning with officials of the budget and police departments in an effort to identify local and federal funds to augment manpower, transportation and resources. The Governor asked the police to set priorities for the use of recently awarded grant funds. They have 1,144,909 dollars in a block grant that is to be used for communication, mechanical work, and supplies.

Hydro-seeding is Available

Do you know about hydro seeding? It is a new technique that plants grass seed with a hose and sprayer. It also applies fertilizer mulch and a tackifier to hold the whole system to the ground. DPNR purchased a hydro seeder and you can take a class to learn how to use the system. There is a classes coming up on January 13th at the St. Croix Campus of UVI.

Vitelco will be closed today. The 912 emergency service will be available during business hours. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Sigma Theta Omega Chapter will host the 3rd annual Karuma 1997, a Kwanza Community celebration today at the Cruz Bay Bandstand in St. John. There is a Kwanza Fest tonight at the St. Croix Education Complex and on Monday there is a Kwanza gathering at Ivanna Eudora Kean School coming up on Monday at 7:00 PM – There are Horse Races at Randall Doc James race Track at Noon. The festival grounds open at 6:00 PM – and the opening tramp is from Frederiksted Post Office to the Village. 8:00 PM – Music Dept. of Maranatha Seventh Day Adventist School invites you to a choir performance entitled “Let there be joy in this place” this evening at 5:00 PM – at Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lindburg Bay. Coming Up: Sts Peter and Paul Home School is looking for all students, parents and alumnae at a Dancing Affair on Saturday December 27th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Club House.

Water Island Report
