Our Chefs Are Going on Television
Chefs from some of the finest US Virgin Islands Restaurants will be featured on the Discovery Channel this fall. The new television program is called great Chefs of the Caribbean and will premier on Sept 29th. The chefs in the show include Chris Fulcher of the Old Stone Farmhouse on St. Thomas and Kevin Boxx and Roy Khoo of the Ritz Carlton. From St. Croix the chef is Bent Resmussen of the Top Hat Restaurant and Michael Madsen of the Great House Villa Madeline. From St. John the Caneel Bay resort provided Chef Andrew Comey and Hubert Lorenz. In the 30 minute show each chef will prepare an appetizer, entrÈe or dessert. Discovery Channel reaches 68 million households. The show will air in 1998 on the Public Broadcast Network and around the world.

St. John Gets Better Roads
St. John is going to get a major road work involving resurfacing of 2,840 linear feet of asphalt. They are going to be constructing new drainage and driveway adjustments along the road way. You are asked to remove vehicles that are in the way of the work. The Dept. of Public Works also is proud that the design work on the project was all accomplished within the department.
Rules Committee Passed All the Revenue Bills.
It was like clockwork. The Rules committee passed six new revenue generating bills along with the 1998 budget and sent the whole package to the full senate. This time there were no interruptions. They also held the line against further pay increases for the government staff.
US Department of Agriculture to Streamline.
This could be good or bad news. The US Department of Agriculture announced that it is streamlining its operations and will move the headquarters for overseeing our projects from an office in Vermont to Florida. The stated object is to reduce delinquency in the rural housing program caseload.
Grants for Teachers.
Here’s another grant for science teachers. CIBA Specialty Chemicals will award $1000 to each teacher, principal in its high school science teaching awards program. All science teachers should apply. Call 703-243-7100. I have information at WSTA.
You Can Make Some Good News.
The Office of Insular Affairs in Washington is looking for World War Two holders of the Distinguished Service Cross. This is the nations second highest honor. The Government is considering conferring the Medal of Honor on some Distinguished Service Cross holders, so they are asking all to come forward. The Governor’s Home Roof Program is on St. John today until 4 o’clock at the Territorial Court Boulon Center. Bring photo identification and the deed to the house. Cooperative Extension Service has a class today on pesticide application. This is a rectification class. Today from noon to 3:00 PM – at the UVI St. Thomas and St. Croix. 778-9491. Addelita Cancaryn School PTA committees are meetings at the Cafeteria at 5:30 PM – And Joseph Siblley School is inviting all parents to a PTA meeting at 5:30 PM to meet the faculty. New Yorker Talent Contest – Cruzian is First Runner Up.
Being number two isn’t bad at all. Channel Hector of St. Croix was in the Rhythms of the Caribbean Talent contest sponsored by the New Yorker Mag and Island Records Jamaica and the Caribbean Tourism organization. She gets to perform in the 21st Annual Caribbean Tourism Conference in Aruba on Friday. ChannÈl Says it is a dream come true. That’s Channel Hector making good news.
Water Island Report
Saturday was a Big Day on Water Island. The staff of the Admiralty Dive Shop held their third annual PADI Project Aware Clean up on Water Island’s Honeymoon beach. The event was sponsored by Launch with Larry, Hard Rock Cafe, West Indian Company, VIMAS, and former Senator Bingley Richardson.
