Refugees from Montserrat
Governor Roy Schneider says he’s worked out an agreement with the U.S. Department of State, The Immigration and Naturalization Service and the White House to allow relatives of Montserratians living in the USVI temporary residence should they wish to evacuate their volcano plagued nation. Speaking on Addie Ottley’s “Morning Show” over WSTA-AM, the governor said “it would be immoral not to help at a time like this.” Meanwhile Delegate to Congress Dr. Donna Christian Green announced she has reached an agreement with the U.S. State Department to expedite the processing of visitors visas through the U.S. Embassy in Barbados. Spokesman James O’Bryan said assistance is available through the delegates offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix for Montserratians wishing to assist family members at home process the proper documents.

Tourism
In preparation for the coming winter tourist season, the V.I. government is preparing a four-point-seven-million dollar ad campaign. Two million dollars is reportedly targeted for television ads. Magazine ads promoting USVI tourism are scheduled to appear in travel, bridal, diving, and gourmet magazines. Meanwhile on the island of St. Croix, the Chamber of Commerce is going high tech with a world wide web site promoting tourism. This initiative is one of the first efforts of the new St. Croix Tourism Development Council.
Disabled Campaign
The eighth and final civil rights suit on behalf of disabled citizens was filed in U.S. District Court this week by the V.I. ADA Ad Hoc Advocacy Committee. A new set of defendants is expected to be named at a press conference scheduled for August 21 on the island of St. Croix. In recent weeks the ad hoc committee has targeted shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, banks and medical offices in an effort to gain complaince for the 1996 Americans with Disabilities Act.
Park Center Meeting
The head of the National Park Service Southeast Regional Office says he will allow a St. John citizen’s task force to review the final version of park plans to build a new visitors center in the heart of Cruz Bay. Jerry Belson made this pledge after a public meetring held at the Julius E. Sprauve School Monday night. Officials of the Park Service say they have federal funds to help them make much needed changes to the existing center and to consolidate their operations.
Blue Marlin
Fishing boat captain Mike Lemon got his revenge. He used his champion vessel Revenge to achieve victory in the annual USVI Open Atlantic Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament. Proceeds benefiting the Boy Scouts of St. Thomas-St. John Lemon’s fishing party went 9 for 9 in marlin catches for the first three days of the four day annual event. Winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive win. Coming Up:

The St. Thomas-St. John Red Cross continues its four day mini disaster workshop from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Education Department’s Teleconferencing Center.
Water Island Report
The Department of Public Works is into the third day of a clean up of Water Island, that’s according to transportation director, Bingley G. Richardson. Richardson said there was a delay but the clean up is scheduled to resume later this week4
