Bureau of Economic Research says “Economy is Rebounding”

The Bureau of Economic Research has a report on the first half of 1997. Things are looking up. Cruise ship passengers were up 22 % that’s 890,000 visitors coming on cruise ships. The report says “Never before have so many cruise ship passengers visited the islands between January and June.” Air arrivals are up 16%, overnight hotel stays were up 22 % on St. Thomas St. John and stable on St. Croix.

Daily News Is A Finalist

The Daily News has been selected as a finalist in the Associated Press Managing Editors Association Public Service Awards. They were nominated for the special series written by Melvin Claxton about education in the Virgin Islands. This is the sixth time in 12 years that the paper has been a finalist in these awards.

What will the Housing Authority look like in the Year 2002?

The Housing Authority has completed its Comprehensive Five Year Plan and is opening it up to public comment. This is the blue print for our Housing Authority through the year 2002 and while the Area office is reviewing the plan you can see it at the Housing Authority central offices in both St. Thomas and St. Croix.

America’s Cup Challenge has Challenge

To stay in the America’s Cup contention, the local Cup Challenge has to post a security bond, this will separate the serious from the day sailors. As of August 11, the Cup Challenge is launching the Virgin Islands Partners Program to raise the money for the bond.

AT&T Drops Long Distance Rates

The Government FCC ordered a reduction to the access fees long distance companies must pay to the monopoly phone companies. While the local access fees have not been reduced, AT&T announced that it was reducing its fees during daytime and evening hours by 5%.

Report from Montserrat

An early report from Montserrat says the latest lava flows were in the Gages valley. The flows which extended into Plymouth had reached the sea at Port Plymouth and ignited buildings along the entire stretch of Fort Ghaut. The good news, no one has been injured.

There is a meeting this evening at 7:30 PM – at the Legislative Conference Room St. Thomas or Call Mrs. Smith at 777-8157 Tonight is Night Out. This is the tenth anniversary of Night Out to celebrate ten years of working together to stop drugs, crime and violence. COAST is working with the Law Enforcement Planning Committee for an exciting Savan Night Out at Rothschild Frances Market Square.

Small Pockets of Beauty.

The St. Croix Anti-litter and beautification commission’s clean and preen program has been making garbage cans and plants to help beautify St. Croix. The students have recycled Hess Oil Barrels and painted them in festive colors. The new barrels are along the waterfront and around the schools. They are asking everyone to put trash in the containers and enjoy the small pockets of beauty.

On the sore spot report:

You know the burned out house at the top of Polyburg Hill as you travel from Downtown out toward the hospital, Well the burned out house a the top of the hill is getting a clean up. Yesterday the crew was closing up the windows. Maybe it will get a paint job and stop being a sore spot. We’ll see if it gets painted or remains a sore spot forever.

There is a New Man running Our Prisons

Attorney General Julio Brady appoints Major Gerald V Enos to Acting Director of Bureau of Corrections. Enos was last the Director of Corrections in Key West where he oversaw the construction of a new facility and turned one of the nation’s worst prison systems into a model of efficient operations. He developed award winning rehabilitation programs.
