The Federal Budget Has More for the USVI
The Office of Insular Affairs has announced that the new federal budget has new funds for the insular areas. Alan Stayman of the Office of Insular Affairs says the fine print in the budget includes new funds for the Medicaid program, new funds for the Children’s Health Initiative and new funds for the Pell grants education program. The Virgin Islands will get 750,000 new dollars for Medicaid and more than 300,000 of the Children’s health Initiative. Individual Pell Grants will increase from $2340 to $2700 in the next school year and to $3000 in 1998-99 year.

Agriculture for the needy.
The Department of Agriculture has transformed a traffic hazard into a boon for the needy. Three quarters of a ton of beef from impounded animals is being distributed to not-for-profit agencies. This means stray animals found in the roads are being impounded and if they are not claimed, they are slaughtered and the fresh meat is going to the Youth Rehabilitation Center, The Herbert Grigg Home, Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services and the Bureau of Corrections.
Finance Committee Hears WTJX Budget
The public television system was the subject of today’s budget hearings in the Senate. Calvin Bastian showed in his presentation that the proposed cut of $400,000 would cripple the television system. He is intent on improving service in St. Croix and maintaining the level of locally produced television in the Virgin Islands.
Ivanna Eudora Kean School Announces the Uniform Requirements
The administration of Ivanna Eudora Kean School released a statement on the acceptable clothing for the coming school year. No designer clothes, no stone washed jeans, no hats, knee high stocking, no wrap skirts of tights or vests, no lace, frills or ornaments. Men will wear maroon pants, shirts will be light pink with selves and collars. Women’s skirts will not be more than an inch above the knee.
Fortuna Reefer off the reef
The Coast Guard announced that they have successfully refloated the Fortuna reefer off Moan Island. The ship is now being inspected before it will go to port.
