West Indies Company Dock Has Good News

The cruise ship schedule is out and there is good news. Four mega ships are coming here. The Dawn Princess , the Galaxy and the Rhapsody of the Seas will begin coming every Friday starting in mid October. The fourth ship, the Enchantment of the Sea will come every Thursday and continue year round. We have 65 ships scheduled for Oct, 112 in November, 123 in December, 118 for January 96 in February and 111 in March with 80 scheduled for April of 1998. Also during the summer of 1998 there will be at lest one ship every day except Saturday. Advance booking on the cruise ships are running 10 to 12 % ahead of past years. And we have another mega ship joining our regular visitors in the fall of 1998. See things are getting better, a lot better.

Virgin Islands America’s Cup Challenge – Free Sailing Class

There is a new free sailing program from the America’s Cup Challenge. Every Saturday starting August 2 there will be free sailing lessons on Magens Bay at 10 to noon. Pre-registration is not necessary. Our youth have a new opportunity to learn to sail. Call 774-9090 Ex 32

USVI Travel News Wins Awards

The Department of Tourism and Martin Puerto Rico have another award for their excellence in public communication. The quarterly newsletter from Department of Tourism won the 50th annual Virginia Public relation’s Awards

Beacon Schools Appoints Valerie George to Executive Director

The Board of the Beacon Schools announced they have appointed Valery George as the new executive director of the school. George is on leave from the Department of Education. She says her goal is to make Beacon School a beacon of hope and a model of excellence in the Virgin Islands.

Important Guests Came to Virgin Islands

We had Civil Rights Leader Myrlie Evers here this week and Kweisi Mfume of the NAACP here yesterday. Both were given the red carpet treatment and met briefly with Wylie Whisonant and Governor Schneider

Lieutenant Governor Offices all Moved

Three divisions of the Lieutenant Governor office have moved and those moves are complete. The recorder of Deeds, the Tax Assessors Office and the Division of Corporations and Trademarks have all moved to the Builder’s Emporium Building in Estate Thomas.

Department of Education Seeks Librarians.

The Department of Education has announced that they are seeking qualified librarians and Special Education Teachers for the 97-98 school year. Call 774-0100 Ex 3051

Aid for Montserrat Children

The Montserrat Red Cross is putting out an appeal for aid for the children. The Montserrat Association of St. Croix came up with funds to buy school uniforms and school books for 300 Children on Montserrat. Now the red cross is working on a program to take the island children to vacation. Air Jamaica and The Netherlands Navy have provided free transportation for the children. They need additional help to finalize the program.

There will be a public meeting on July 31st at the Sprauve Auditorium, at 6:30 PM Virgin Islands Council on the Arts has a series of workshops on how to apply for grants. July 31st at Lutheran Church St. John. Coming Up: on Sunday Judith King’s art will be on display at Van Rensselaer Art Gallery at American Yacht Harbor from 2:30 to 7:30 PM

Drug Free Summer Calypso Show

This Friday from 10:00 AM – to noon The Drug Free Summer Youth Calypso Fest will feature Children from all the summer camps performing their own original Calypso songs. That’s Friday CAHS at 10:00 AM – A Big Thank You to Calypsonians SlyJ, and Solemnity, the teachers and organizers of the show

Aquannette Y. Chinnery has just returned from the Convention of Trial Lawyers of America and she is opening a new law office in St. Thomas She recently graduated from Rutger’s Law school with honors, She was the editor of the Law Review

Students going to Rain Forest

The students in the Junior Gardening and Ecology Camp are planning a trip to Puerto Rico to study the El Yunque Rain Forest. To earn the funds for the trip there is a Cake sale on Saturday at Cost U Less SO come help the junior gardeners learn about the ecology of a rain forest. Have your cake and eat it too,
