Emancipation Day for the Disabled

Thursday is Emancipation Day and the Virgin Islands Advocacy Committee will file the first of a series of territory wide law suits to enforce compliance with the American’s with Disabilities Act. On Thursday at Golden Rock there will be a press briefing about the law suits as the VIAA Brings Emancipation Day to the Disabled.

FEMA is a half Million Ahead

The Senate held two days of public hearings on Disaster preparedness. FEMA has already spent over a half million dollars in storm preparations. The Army Corp. of Engineers has 10 million on flood relief projects though they won’t all be finished this year. And better weather prediction technology is in place, so we’ll know about a storm 72 hours in advance. But on the down side, The Red Cross is squeaking by with not enough money to manage a disaster.

Election System Reform

The idea that we should reform our election system is open to public debate. There is a copy of the proposed election system reforms available at the Boulon Center on St. John, At the Baa Library and UVI library on St. Thomas and at the Williams Library and Petersen Library on St. Croix. Copies are also at the offices of the election system. Public hearings are slated for July 9th on St. John, July 10th on St. Thomas and on July 11th on St. Croix.

Democrats Seek Unity

Lorraine Berry, Delegate Christian-Green and Derek Hodge are calling all Democrats to a special gathering to re-build party unity. This is coming up on Saturday July 5th at the Courtyard in Smith Bay. There willbe a similar meeting on July 16th at Midland Restaurant on St. Croix

Delegate Christian-Green hosts Mocko Jumbies in DC

On Friday Delegate Christian-Green hosted the Alli Paul Original Mocko Jumbies for a performance on the steps of the US Capitol in Washington DC The Mocko Jumbies’s were in Washington DC for Caribbean festival and entertained tourists and Congressional staff to the sounds of Violators Band and Jam Band. Delegate Christian-Green also urges us to aid Montserrat and she is asking the White House to step in to aid Montserrat.

Montserrat Needs Help and Getting It

Relief supplies are being collected for Montserrat. They need canned food, soap, diapers, hygiene products, and money are needed. Bring relief supplies to the USO Building on the waterfront and the Captain Johnny 1 will travel to Montserrat today. Also on St. Croix Take donations to Kinney Shoes in the Sunny Isle Shopping Center. . 07/01/97 8:57 AM

Artist of the Month at the Hospitality Lounge is Elliott Silverman with acrylics and oils. He was in the food business, but now Elliott makes his living as an artist. Intense color and texture characterize his oils and acrylics.
