Teachers to Submit to Binding Arbitration
The Department of Education and the Teachers Union have agreed to submit their dispute over the last days of school to binding arbitration. The topic is whether the make-up days are overtime or replacements for the late start of school. The teachers and the Department have agreed to abide by the arbitrators decision.

Liston Davis Saddened by Violence at School
Commissioner of Education Liston Davis says he is deeply disturbed and saddened by the recent violence at the Education Complex. He says our students need help from the school, parents, and the community. The scourge of violence must be stopped before it consumes us all. 05/15/97 8:34 AM
Joanne Bozzuto is resigning from the IRB.
She was Acting Director of Finance, she is the director of the IRB, but now she says it is time to go into the private sector. She says it has been a challenging period in her life, dealing with the hurricane and the government financial shortfall. She says No regrets, just it’s time to move on. 05/15/97 7:35 AM
Carnival Cruise Lines Training Ship
Senator David Jones is asking the president of Carnival Cruise Lines to send their training ship to St. Croix to teach hotel and casino operations. If Carnival is coming to St. Croix to buy the Carambola Beach Resort, then they should begin training here too. 05/15/97 7:56 AM
What is a Junior Solar Sprint?
It’s a contest for 7th 8th and 9th graders to build and race solar powered vehicles and it is tomorrow morning at CAHS. The students have to design, build and race their cars. They get a standard solar powered motor and the rest of the design is up to them. Teams from Antilles, Wesleyan, Addelita Cancaryn, Boschulte School, Kean School, the Education Complex, Good Hope, 7th Day Adventist and St. Joseph school will contend for the best design.
Petrus says No Mega Youth Festival This Year
Senator Allison Petrus announced that there is not enough sponsorship for the Mega Youth Festival this year. He promises that the festival will be back next year – bigger and better. 05/15/97 7:58 AM
Wintberg Road to get resurfaced
The Dept. of Public Works announced that a resurfacing project is set for Wintberg Estate. Prep work is beginning today and to Rosendahl Shady Lane Roadway. The work will probably not disrupt traffic and motorists are reminded to watch and obey the flag men. 05/14/97 3:03 PM
Gas Prices to Fall
Senator Holland Redfield said that Esso Virgin Islands will take 4 cents off the wholesale price of gasoline. Esso attributed the price cut to the world market and promised that the price cut would be reflected at the pump. Redfield also said Texaco would be meeting with him next week to discuss pricing. Redfield said it is up to us to hunt for the best price and reward the low price vendor with our business.
Governor Schneider wants to Create a Greeters Program.
Governor Schneider was in New York City at the Chase Bank home office and he likes an idea that New York uses to improve its appeal to tourists. The program is the Greeters Program, it uses volunteers to take visitors on walking tours of New York City. Governor Schneider thinks we can develop a similar program here under Chase Bank’s sponsorship. The idea is to draw on students, senior citizens to give visitors rich experience with our culture and history.

Tyrone Martin says No St. John traffic light, but St. John is getting a major roadside maintenance job. From now through May 20th the crews are working on Route 104 from Pine Peace to Gift Hill Road. Then next week they are doing pavement and drainage work on Fish Bay Road. Oh, and that sore spot near Education Street St. Thomas has been cleaned up. Thanks Guys.
Coming Up:
Today is Peace Officer Memorial Day. The Law Enforcement Supervisory Union salutes those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice – their lives – in the line of duty. There is a laying of wreaths on the graves of fallen officers on St. Thomas.
DARE To Graduate
Virgin Islands Police Crime Prevention DARE program is holding graduation on May 15th Thursday at 10:00 AM – at the Church of God of Prophecy on Weymouth Rhymer Highway. 500 students are graduating. All parents are invited. The graduates have learned about the seriousness of drug abuse and drug awareness. Most importantly, the graduates have built up their resistance to the lure of drugs.
