Honor of Honors Parade the Largest Ever.
Senator Judy Gomez hosts an annual parade to honor the top students in all the schools. Yesterday’s parade was a huge success and the turnout of onlookers, parents and supporters along the parade route was the largest turnout ever. Congratulations to all the honors students. 05/19/97 7:43 AM

Department of Education Has Hearing today
Arbitration hearing is today for Department of Education and the Teachers Union regarding the end date of school in those schools where the opening of school was delayed. They will be working out a schedule for the rest of the school year and this is binding arbitration, the parties agreed to do what the arbitrators say.

Prison News
The Daily News has a front page story about the parole Board getting ready to release some inmates but there is another story. Today, the women at Golden Grove Correctional Facility are holding a peaceful demonstration to raise awareness of their grievances. They say they are not paid on a timely basis, they says inmates are housed with the mentally ill and crack addicts, and they say the conditions in the prison are poor, crowded and the food is bad.
Are you ready for the Bees
Dept. of Agriculture says that this is Bee swarming season and with mangos ripening, children and bees are drawn to the same fruit. St. Croix has confirmed swarms of Africanized killer bees. If you are confronted by an attack, seek shelter fast; in a house, a car, a ditch. Cover your head and neck and run. Call the fire service, they have gear and chemicals to deal with bee swarms. If you just see a swarm leave them alone. They only attack when disturbed. There are no killer bees on St. Thomas, St. John or Water Island so far. 05/19/97 11:27 AM
Safe Boating Week
This week is designated as safe boating week in the Virgin Islands and it is time to look at your boat and make sure all the right safety gear is in place. Do you have floatation devices for everyone on board, Do you have a fire extinguisher, Flare, whistle or horn? Make some good news, make your boat safe.
Senate Hearings tonight
The Committee on Government Operations will hold public hearings tonight at the Boulon Center St. John to take public comments on the proposal for compulsory automobile insurance. 05/19/97 10:45 AM
On the sore spot report:
Hey who took this van. On Friday evening a bad person went through Blackbeard’s Hill smashing windows on cars and taking radios and phones. That wasn’t enough, the bad guy stole a Ford Aerostar Van. The van is a white 1990 with license plate number T-36331. We have a report that the van is in Hospital Grounds near Mickey D’s. Can someone go by and confirm this.
Urban Forestry
There are grants available for urban forestry. These grants are for forestry education, care of existing trees and methods of forestry conservation. To receive a grant, you must attend a workshop. They are being held Wednesday on St. John, Thursday on St. Thomas and Friday on St. Croix.
Good News for turtles.
Senator Adlah Fonsie Donastorg spent part of the weekend participating in a turtle watch. Fonsie joined volunteers monitoring the turtle nesting site at Sandy Point to protect the turtle eggs from predators. Sandy Point is one of 13 places in the world where this endangered species nests. They need more volunteers, so you can make some good news, call 773-4554 and volunteer for the turtle watch.
Water Island Report
There are no Africanized Killer Bees on Water Island. Nothing happened, except an excellent sunset and supreme swimmingÖ Same stuff, different day.
