New grants to Fight Crime
Delegate Dr Donna Christian-Green announced that the Virgin Islands is going to receive two law enforcement grants. One grant is 600,000 dollars for the victim assistance program which is a huge increase over the past grant. There is also a smaller grant to fund an evaluation of Police prevention programs of crime. 03/15/97 7:19 AM
Berry Supports Change in Telecommunications Act
Senate President Lorraine Berry spoke at the Public Services Commission Seminar. She favors of the proposed new Telecommunications Act, calling it a revenue enhancer for our government. She called for more competition in telecommunications services and new services. She also said consumers are in no mood for higher rates for telephone, cable, e-mail and other services.
Gospel Festival Is Coming Gospel Festival Is Coming
Wylie Whisonant announced today that the Virgin Islands is hosting a new special event. The Gospel in Paradise Musical Festival will be a an extravaganza of gospel sounds. Mark the dates now. July 3,4,5 and 6th This festival is the first, and should put the Virgin Islands on the Gospel music map. World renowned gospel singers will join local performers at concerts each evening. New Financial Control Board
Senate Rules Committee approved a bill to create a Financial Control Board to oversee the finances of the territory and require the Gov. to submit a report on all borrowing from Gov. funds and accounts within 30 days. The rules Committee also passed the bill to change the Casino Control Act to make the rules more attractive to investors and less costly to administer. They approved leases for the All Stars Steel Band, Lynch Pit Stop, St. Thomas Catering and the Post office. 03/15/97 7:29 AM
Poster contest
VITEMA is inviting all students ages 7 to 12 to create a poster around the theme – All Roads Lead to Preparedness. Posters are due on April first at the VITEMA offices on the three big islands.

NetDay Orientation
Today isn’t NetDay orientation that’s next Saturday. Today is the meeting for all volunteers who want to help with NetDay next week. Go to the library Ivanna Eudora Kean School at 9:30AM. On St. Croix meet at John Woodson School at 9:30AM. This is a meeting for volunteers who want to donate time or assistance to the wiring of our schools for the World Wide Web site and the Internet. NetDay is Sat March 22.
Beekeeper’s Alert
Are there enough Beekeepers in the Virgin Islands to form a bee keepers association? Cooperative Extension Service is going to sponsor a bee keeping association . The first meeting will be March 18 at Cooperative Extension Service St. Thomas at 7:30. The next gathering for beekeepers is March 20th on St. John at Cooperative Extension Service above Joe’s Discount in Cruz Bay and on the 26th on St. Croix at the Research and Extension Service room 133.
