We have a Miss Universe Contestant
There is Miss Universe Contest. going on, and our own Linette Smith is in the contest. She’s a daughter of Marjorie Smith of Smith’s Ferry Service and she was a Carnival Queen first runner up in 1994 and Miss CAHS in 1993. Linette Smith is in the Miss Universe contest, representing the British Virgin Islands. You can see her picture and vote for her for in the Miss Photogenic contest portion of Miss Universe, all on the internet. Vote for her on the Internet. That’s great news.
Schedule of ships
The schedule of ships between May and October has just been released by the Dept of Tourism. The MS Inspiration and other mega ships are on the list. The 1995 table of data is out. We had 1,733,300 visitors last year. That’s actually up on a 5 year average.
FEMA Loan Rebate
The governor announced FEMA will cancel part of our loan from Hurricane Hugo. Congressman Victor Frazer provided some additional details. The original loan was for 50 million. It has been paid down in part, and accrued interest too. FEMA is offering to forgive 18.2 million in principal and over 8 million in interest leaving a debt from Hugo of approximately 36 million dollars. The Congressman met yesterday with Susan F. Duncan of the Dept. of transportation who has been assigned to the Alexander Hamilton to secure funds to improve our airport.
Blue Thumb
WAPA wants you to think about water and how to conserve water in your home and office. Did you know that WAPA makes over 7 million gallons of fresh water from sea water every day and delivers it to you and me. They want us to be aware of the water and save it wherever we can. The Blue Thumb program will call attention to ways you can save water.
New Scholarship
There is a new $1000 Harry Daniel Scholarship from the St John Community Foundation, for residents of St. John only. GED students can apply. The funds can be used for college or university or trade school. Lonnie Willis at Raintree Inn in Cruz Bay. Deadline is May 21.
Dept. of Public Works Notes
Eric LeBlanc will get a DPW watch for being first contractor to sign up for the upcoming DBE conference on June 16-19 at Frenchman’s Reef. DPW says keep your posters off public and government property. Coke sprang to action and took their posters off the trees. Down by Monday says Tyrone Martin or he is going to haul them down.
Tourism Culture Fair
Tourism Culture Fair is on today from 9 AM to 9 PM with Stanley and the ten sleepless Knights, St. Croix Heritage Dancers, McCleverty’s Traditional Mocko Jumbies, and storytellers. At Emancipation Garden. Taxi Drivers, take your guests to Eg for the fair.

- King and Queen Show at 7 PM at the Education Complex St. Croix
- Partners for Health is sponsoring a Kon Tiki Boat ride at 7 PM sharp Celebrate Mother’s Day and help the Cancer Fund.

- Nevis Benevolent Society is holding an emergency meeting on Friday at 7:30 at the usual place.
- Tomorrow Junior gardening and Ecology Club and the Junior Audubon Club are holding a joint meeting on Saturday at 1 PM at CAHS – there are plans for taking a trip to Tortola.
