Three Win Awards
Three science and math teachers on St. Croix were given the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics teaching. Lona Burnetta Crossman of Markoe School, Patricia Ann Bessette so Country Day and James Anthony Petrait of St. Joseph go to Washington DC in May to receive their awards. Our kids are learning from the best.

I told you yesterday, that Caribbean World Magazine called us the “Islands of the Year”. Now ‘Caribbean Travel and Life’ has named a lot of our sights the best in the Caribbean. Sandy Point Wildlife refuge is the Best Natural Attraction. Scott’s Beach is the top hidden beach, Government Hill on St. Thomas and Bordeaux Mountain on St. John are the Best Views in the Caribbean. Also Reef Bay Trail in St. John is the Best Hiking in the Caribbean. There’’s more firsts for our places.
New Police Officers
There are 43 new police officers on patrol. They graduated earlier this week – 20 on St. Thomas and 23 on St. Croix. They are on the job working the street patrols. When you see a new police person, go up and say hello. They are making good news.
Senate Off Duty
The Senate is not meeting today after yesterdays session ended without a quorum. While the Senators were in the legislature building Senate President Rocky Liburd closed the session and reassigned the agenda to the next session. Next week Senate committees will consider bills that effect gun ownership and a whether itinerant vendors can sell alcohol.
Tax Help
Do you need help with your taxes? There’s a BIR taxpayer assistance program and you can go to Tutu Park Mall Saturday at noon until 5 PM. The staff of the Bureau of Internal Revenue will have forms and can help you fill them out.
Thanks for the Hot Line
Senator Vargrave Richards sent his thanks to Vitelco for assistance with setting up the Confidential hot line. Vitelco set up the hot line at no cost to the government in an effort to help young people tell the confidential listener information they know that can prevent crime or help solve a crime. It is a tool to empower the young. The number again is 774- 1159.

Silver Lining
From the Silver Lining Department, St. John celebrated World Health Day yesterday with a Health Fair at the Nazareth Lutheran Church. If you missed it, Peace Corp School is bringing their study of Nutrition to a close with a Health and Nutrition Fair. Today from 1 to 4 PM. There is food to eat, and healthy snacks, and vegetarian food and food from local restaurants, Dominick’s has goodies. You can talk with a farmer or the nutritionist. The public is welcome to stop by Ulla Muller School for the Peace Corp Kids Health Fair. Do I hear free food?
