Contributions to Reward Fund
Last week the Chamber of Commerce set up a fund to reward citizens who help the police make an arrest. VI Restore Hope made a $500 contribution. So did the Montserrat Association. Both associations called on everyone to pitch into the fund. In related news, a gun was recovered at CAHS that has been linked to suspects in an October carjacking and may be linked with the recent shootings as well. And Senator Liburd has called a summit meeting on crime for Wednesday at 4 PM at Government House.
Shooting Victim to Help Hospital
William Garrity, the man who was shot at Saga Haven, well, he has set up a fund for the Intensive Care Unit of St. Thomas hospital. Garrity, his wife and numerous friends have contributed to the fund. Which will be used to buy emergency equipment for the hospital. Other recent donations to the hospital include the Catholic Daughters of America who sent funds for the pediatric unit, Sunsrise Pharmacy which donated blood pressure units to the emergency room and 400 boxes of medication from a group of catholic pilgrims who visited from a cruise ship.
Award Luncheon
UVI Small Business Development Center and the Virgin Islands Business Journal are honoring the 1995 Business leaders award winners at a luncheon at L’’Escargot today at noon. The awards are sponsored by Chase Bank and ATT Long Distance.
Tenant to Owner Bill
The Committee on Housing, Parks and Recreation met last evening to take public testimony on a bill to transform renters to owners in public housing. Senator White said everyone is ready to buy for a dollar. He says that it will take more than a dollar for most of the units to be purchased. Qualified buyers must be in good standing, have a low to moderate inclome and be long term tenants of public housing. Hearings continue tonight on St. Croix at 6PM at the Legislative Conference room in Frederiksted.
The Boat People are Meeting
VITEMA and DPNR are calling all fishermen, boat owners, sailors and live aboards to a meeting March 19th at the National Guard Armory in Nazareth to discuss marine hazards, storm moorings and warnings of impending storms. Call 775-6762
Kids Volleyball
Ron Blyden is a proud coach of the Kappa Kids Volleyball teams. The 11 to 15 year olds beat 11 teams in the primary division and took the sportsman ship award. The women are now standing at 1 win and 1 loss. Come cheer them at Brewers Beach on Saturday as they practice.

Edith Williams Adopted
Here’s good news for the Edith Williams School. Island Finance has decided to adopt the school’s after school tutorial program. Island Finance will pay the salary for the teacher and the snacks the students consume in the program. Island Finance is also going to purchase the material to build the schools computer laboratory. That’s the good folks at Island Finance making good news for the Edith Williams School.
