Student Symposium A Success
The effort to confront violence got a boost over the weekend at the youth symposium which brought over 450 students together to understand and violent activity. One guest speaker, Shawn Dove, talked about having the schools open for 15 hours a day with remedial learning, supervised recreations, computer skills and other activities. AT&T President Barry Florence offered to lead the effort to fund after school activities. Brenda Joyce Muhammed delivered her message about violence prevention. Her goal is to put the Justice Department OUT OF BUSINESS.
Essay contest Winners
The Black History Month essay contest winners were honored. The high school honorees were Kathleen Hosie, Nicole Andre and Gail Douglas. Good work. The Stop the Violence enthusiasm continues today at the Berthe C. Boschulte School at 1 PM with the schools own anti-violence conference.
Surveillance Equipment Recommended
Senator Bellardo De O’Neal suggests that the Governor take advantage of federal funds to install surveillance equipment in key locations throughout troubled schools. Called the Watchful eye program, the senator notes that there is federal funds to purchase the equipment.
Highway Traffic Lights
Pay attention to the lights on the waterfront highway. Over the weekend Public Works worked on the lights from Windward Passage to Fort Christian. The lights are being activated today and all week there will be fine tuning of the lights. It is important that you look at the lights to see if they are flashing or steady. It is up to you to pay attention to the new lights. If its is flashing amber, that means proceed with caution, and if it is flashing red means come to a complete stop.
Language Week
This is foreign languages week at the Ivanna Eudora Kean School. Every language student is supposed to greet everyone in the language they are studying and teach their parents to say My child studies this language. So say Guten Morgen, Bon Giorno, Buenos Dias, and O-hio-gozaimas to everyone.
Tourism Essay
The Dept of Tourism reminds all Virgin Islands youth about the Conde Nast Essay contest. There are prizes for kids 12 and under and others for the older kids. The topic is What Cruise Tourism Means To My Country. Do that in 300 words on only one page and you might win part of the $20,000 in prizes.
Fishery Management
The Caribbean Fishery Management Council is meeting starting today to discuss closing some areas and a marine conservation district south of St. John. The meeting is at Frenchman’s Reef and it is open to the public.
Science Fair
Elena Christian Science Fair produced a crop of winning young scientists. First place in physical science went to Rochelle Fabio for her study of Chewing Gum vs. Bubble Gum. Joel Ortiz took first place in earth science for a study of airborne pollution in St. Croix. Asha-Lee Gibbs won the biology prize for a study of blood drops at the scene of a crime. Good work scientists.
