Fresh Air for Bovoni Residents
The Governors ordered the health service to set up a respiratory clinic for firefighters and Bovoni residents who inhaled smoke from last week’s fire. The governor also ordered better equipment for the firefighters and he told DPW officials to expedite the contract to vent the methane that is maintaining the other landfill fire.
Congressman Visits
The Governor also met with Congressman Don Young, who is chairman of the House Resources Committee. The congressman is here to evaluate the recovery from Hurricane Marilyn. The Governor and the Congressman visited the Evelyn Williams School, the PolIyberg housing units, the hospital and Lockhart Gardens. The congressman is headed to St. Croix to visit some of the federal land the Virgin Islands government wants transferred.
United Way
United Way is in striking distance of their goal. With 81% of the goal already collected and in the bank, the United Way effort needs $92,000 to hit the mark. The Cultural Fair and Bazaar is Sat March 30th at Emancipation Garden
Highway Lights
Pay attention to the lights on the waterfront highway. Over the weekend Public Works worked on the lights from Windward Passage to Fort Christian. The lights will be fine tuned all week. Residents of Estate Thomas, Sugar Estate and Hospital Grounds are invited to the 9th Virgin Islands Disaster Housing Program at the hospital cafeteria today at 6PM. This is for residents who want government contractor to repair their homes.
Essay Contests
The Dept. of Tourism reminds that there are two essay contests going on right now. March 29th is the deadline for the My Caribbean essay contest, This years theme is My country’s undiscovered treasures. Children under 12 can enter with is 250 to 500 words about special features about our islands. Overall winner takes a $2000 scholarship. There’s is also the Florida Carribean Cruse Association Essay contest. Their topic is What Cruise Tourism Means to my Country. Do that in 300 words, on one page. That’s due April the 12th. There’s a $5,000 prize for the under 12 kids and another for those over 12. The schools get matching prizes. Take it to school. Call Avericia Williams 774-8784 Tourism has a competition for a full scholarship to study tourism at Cornell University. The Application deadline is April 1st.

Upward Bound
Twenty Seven Upward Bound students spent the weekend on Tortola at an inspirational seminar to aid them in staying the course and graduating from college. Sen. Potter led the adventure. He said that he is a graduate of the Upward Bound program and credits it with helping him reach for the top. See, Kids reaching for the stars, that’s good news.
