The Governor wants to turn waste into energy at the landfill.
He called the relevant parties to a meeting after receiving a report from Department of Public Works Environmental Specialist May Cornwall. The idea is to set up an aggressive recycling program, and separate different types of degradable trash. The governor calls it a priority in his administration and wants a solution during this year. They will implement the solutions in St. Croix as well.
They are hurling accusations about the windstorm authority.
Lt. Gov. Mapp says Senator Wattlington’s plan to replenish its funds may mean that policyholders get a pro-rated share of their claims. Wattlington responds that it is all Mapp’s fault. He didn’t buy the right liked of reinsurance and Mapp willfully authorized expenditures of non-existent funds. There’s bound to be more.
The Education Committee met yesterday.
The Education Commission is a step closer to reality. Education Commissioner James Cheek, said we are at a watershed in education in the territory and the commission is an important next step in our efforts to improve our education system. The Education Committee passed the bill to punish anyone impersonating a student on school grounds. The bill aims to keep outsiders from picking fights at school.
Do the schools need a law to tell them to teach test taking skills?
Senator Gomez wants to legislate a part of the curriculum to teach how to take standardized tests. Commissioner Cheek asked whether we should use the same effort to teaching analytical abilities, critical acumen, reasoning, comprehending and reading.
Congressman Frazier wants a new committee.
He has asked the House of Representatives to add him to the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Our islands depend so heavily on transportation that the Congressman thinks he can be of significant value.
Don’t go to the St. John tax assessors office for a while,
the whole staff is attending a training session. They will be back in the offices on Monday the 5th of February.

In a giant publicity gimmick, Cuervo Gold is taking over Marina Cay in the British Virgin Islands and turning it into a sovereign nation. They plan to apply to the UN for admission and offer their own Olympic teams. First it was Yugoslavia breaking up, now its the British Virgin Islands.
