The travel industry has St. Croix in its sights.
USAir is extending their existing flight from Baltimore to St. Thomas to include St. Croix. Starting Wednesday, the flight will leave Baltimore at 8:30 AM and arrive on St. Croix at 2:45 PM. And US Air is courting overseas carriers from Iceland and Copenhagen to coordinate their flights so that tourists from Europe can make one easy transfer in Baltimore and come here.
At the same time, St. Croix is getting hydrofoil service again.
Virgin Hydrofoil is resuming service from St. Thomas to St. Croix on Wednesday.
All this travel news means more tourists travel.
That’s good news, because the Bureau of Internal Revenue says our tax receipts are down for the first quarter of the territory’s fiscal year. January Room Tax was only about 380,000 for January compared to over a million dollars last January. December room tax was $300,000 compared to over $800,000 for the prior December. That means we have about 38% of the revenue we had last year at the peak of the season.
The Governor and Senator Liburd are investigating how to create more St. John specific programs and projects.
They are looking into affordable housing, building a Community Center and adding police and fire protection to St. John’s east end.
